Another Liberty Head Coach connection...Alford took over New Mexico after Ritchie McKay was let go when Ritchie took the Liberty position. That is great for Alford though. Coaching in Westwood is going to be fun for him but a real challenge to live up to their lofty expectations.
I'm not sold on him at a high profile school like that. He has done well with schools 'under the radar'. Manchester isn't a popular D3 or small school Indiana or the Midwest. He did good a SMSU, a mid major with some success. Sorta bombed at Iowa, which was still hoping for a return to the glory days of Dr Tom Davis. Did a wonderful job at New Mexico, which is easily confused with New Mexico State. Now he is taking a huge leap to a big stage that still pines for Wooden glory days. Add to that a National title and multiple Final Four appearances, and a penchant for turning on their last 3 coaches Harrick, Lavin and Holland you have an interesting mix for Alford and his ego. Sure he is an IU Legend and I wish him success. I'm just glad they never hired him.
