Schools like UVA, William & Mary, VT, and pretty much any other large state school in the country are well known for their long holding traditions. One of these that I consider to be the most beneficial to establishing an environment is secret societies. As long as there is no illegal activity done, who is to say that Liberty cannot embrace the tradition as well? Just a thought, what do you all think?

Most secret societies started in the late 1800s or early 1900s so Liberty may be a bit behind the curve on that one. How about fraternities/sororities?

I believe when I was a student, those where forbidden by the Liberty Way... I don't see any value in them, and many are cultish. What value do you see in them?

By the way, "nothing illegal" shouldn't be our standard.

Longwood has one...CHI. Members are only revealed after they graduate. They tend to do well after graduation.

Atrain was part of a secret society that doesnt reveal membership until after graduation. Meetings are most likely held in the closet.

For some more local variety, Washington & Lee has one, the Cadaver Society. Founded in 1957. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadaver_Society

And here is a whole slew of a list of secret societies throughout the country http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collegiate ... th_America

They can have a positive effect (see what is written about the Cadaver society), but they can also have a negative effect. All depends on what the membership wants to make it out to be.

Haize founded it a couple decades ago.

Funny story about that. I told Falwell that we were founding G.A.L. (Gay Administrators of Liberty) and Danny Lovett was our Co-Sponsor. This was before the news 'broke'. Which made it funnier.

Ugh. This thread is heading south quickly. Most on this board have no idea who any of the Lovetts are.

Don't blame me. My story is true and I have witnesses! Jerry laughed very heartily and said he was going to take me with him the next time GLAD protested him!

It is but this took place before that 'came out' so to speak. I just didn't want to draw anyone's name into it since,as SLY said, most people on the board don't know who they are.
