I think the keys to next year are what most people think they are. A healthy Burrus, production from whomever replaces Speaks in the lineup, and some relief at PG for JCS and Davon.
Our low post rotation should be good. If Burrus is close to the 11 and 6 guy who can finish, we've got a major upgrade. I'd spend all summer working on a single low post move for Coronado and teach him one or two counters to it. If he can go from 5 and 8 up to 8 and 8 or better, we've suddenly got nearly 20 post points just from the likely starters. JVP's minutes would be limited again and I'd have him just focus on a good 10-15 defensive minutes a night with any offense being gravy. Smith is the wildcard. If he makes another jump like he did this year something like 7 or 8 and 5 from him should be expected with a blocked shot per game thrown in. He may even be able to give us more than that. Gielo, despite the disappearing act in Dayton, had a solid 7 and 4 this year. Help him figure out a consistent post move or two, in addition to his perimeter shooting, and you've got a real solid piece.
The wing is going to be interesting. If the Roberts who scored well against Georgtown, William & Mary, Morgan St. and the like shows up more consitently, he can pick up some of Speaks minutes. Both Smith and Gielo should be able to pick up some minutes at the 3 depending on who the opposition has on the floor. I could see some times with those two on the court where Smith plays 4 on offense and 3 on defense while Gielo plays 3 on offense and 4 on defense. The obvious wildcards are Alcegaire and Kemrite. If either of them can contribute on a consistent basis, it gives us a chance to replace Speaks offensively and we'll have to hope for the best defensively.
Point is an issue and I hope there's a legit recruit signed for the spot. If not, the key may be the hope that Taylor can do at PG what Smith did at SF/PF/C this year and become a solid rotation piece at least by conference play. Let's not forget that Smith didn't do much as a frosh either, playing only 4.4 minutes and giving us 1 and 1 per night. If Taylor can just give us 10-15 minutes a night of good play that would be a tremendous help to JCS and Davon.
I think the scoring ability of Burrus in the post cancels out the loss of Speaks overall, but schematically things will have to change a bit. It's nice to see so little turnover expected for next season and hopefully that translates into a good offseason and an improved regular season next year.
