Willful ignorance. The guy was clearly insinuating that LU is 99% white. A quick look online shows that LU is as racially diverse as Indiana University, and more diverse than schools like Cincinnati, Kansas State, Mizzou, University of Kentucky, & Clemson. We also happen to be more ethnically diverse than fellow 1-A football aspirants App. State and JMU.

I live in Utah, where locally BYU is believed to be King. I am quite proud as a Liberty alum, of Liberty being a private Christian University that is much more multicultural and ethnically diverse than other schools. As a LU alumni and former International Student myself, Liberty has made some great strides I believe to reflect a greater diversity in its student body.

I know well that LU often cites BYU or Notre Dame as models for it's vision (i.e. athletics, population etc); but I have always been glad that Liberty is not like BYU on the subject of diversity. Or, in BYU's case a lack thereof in diversity :)

This might blow some people's minds, but if there are people looking for a university with a very serious diversity problem - look no further than Brigham Young University. As of this Fall 2012, at a school like BYU with over 34,000 students - only 254 of those students are "black."

By the way, the "Fall of 2012" was not a statistically "off year" for black students at BYU. Trust me, this has been the case at BYU for a very long time.

If you don't believe me, check it out from the horses mouth yourself:

It's shameful..

Most local Utahns even know that of those 254 black students, the majority are predominately at BYU as (non-LDS) athletes.

So, Liberty probably has a much better multicultural ratio of students, than BYU's 0.00747 % student body that is black.

Go LU!

How the heck is this bad press? A coach getting arrested mid season is bad press, making a miracle run to one of the biggest stages in sports world wide is an amazing story for the University.

Some of the folks on this board need to take their heads out of the sand and realize that making an amazing run in a conference tournament doesn't make you a quality team. I'm going to cheer my heart out come Tuesday and hope I get to do the same next Thursday/Friday. But come on lets be real here, were still a bottom of the barrel program thats heading in the wrong direction.

Lets just enjoy this ride as much as possible and remain honest with ourselves. This way when LIU Brooklyn beats us by 25 were not standing around scratching our heads wondering why it happened.

FWIW, if you ever get to read "Caught In The Net", by Tates Locke, he tells of how G-W back in the day would bring in local blacks from the Shelby area to sit in the chow hall when recruits came to campus, and how, sometimes after someone led them in a pre-meal blessing/prayer, they would all find $20 bills under their forks. The book is a good read outside of that if you are a hoops junkie.

Good catch, 09. I knew about the states and countries, but can anyone match up the scholarship offers with the respective players?
The Liberty roster is already an unusual mix of players from all over the United States, as well as Poland, Venezuela and Nigeria. It features players who turned down scholarship offers from major basketball programs like Oregon, Oklahoma, Providence and Nevada-Las Vegas, at least in part because of the Christian education at Liberty
.

If that quote is accurate, I guess that shows that LU does in fact have DI talent on this team!

olldflame wrote:I have got to hand it to the NYT. The last couple of major articles they have printed about LU have been fairly accurate and quite fair.
It's the writer, Bill Pennington. Wrote the last one as well. Give him some love on twitter, he's there.

If you want a chuckle, search "liberty university" on twitter and read what the masses have to say...it is quite sad really, all of these "educated" students at these great "selective" universities are nothing but babies sucking on the bottle of American pop culture.

Another GREAT article from the Washington Post about the men's team. Is this article #3?

I love the conclusion paragraph, which is mostly a quote from Coach Layer:
“When you’re a coach, you don’t want to see 20 on the right-hand column,” Layer said. “That’s a depressing number. But I think God had it in his plan. Losing 20 makes it a way bigger story than if we were 20-15. Losing the first eight games of the year makes it a bigger story. We went literally into the depths of college basketball. We were arguably the worst team in the country. I think God had it in his plans. We’ve already beaten the odds.”
