Hello,
I'm a Colorado State alumni that attended from 2005-2009, and now currently live in Virginia working in the engineering industry. I just wanted to stop by because I saw that Liberty hired Colorado State's own Dale Layer back in 2009 (following me I guess, haha), and wanted to give a few thoughts. Dale Layer always struck me as a great man who cared very much about his players and brought a very respectable reputation to Colorado State. I really feel bad though for you good folks at Liberty who have hired this man for successful coaching hopes.
Dale Layer first and foremost was not even close to a competent coach when he was at Colorado State, a very nice man and a very good representative of the school, but was pretty bad as a coach. Many people were ecstatic when Layer was let go from Colorado State as a coach because we felt the program would head in an even better direction under a new coaching staff. Layer always preached about his "defensive philosophy", I had no idea what this meant when he couldn't coach offense or defense to save his life.
Another thing that Layer did that sent Colorado State down a path of pathetic mediocrity was his constant attempts to turn the program into a stage two JUCO players, it got tiring after a good while and essentially destroyed the program. Again, I feel bad for the Liberty fans who want this program to be successful. Dale Layer is a great man personally and a very respectable representative of your guys' fine institution; However he is not close to a competent to a Division I coach. I wish luck for you guys the rest of the season, I hope success comes to the basketball program soon.
