I won´t go there, but I will say that we were a couple of free throws away from winning, which is frustrating considering we had been lights out from the line for the last month til last night.

Also another missed point blank layup by Gielo. He did the same thing against High Point on a shot that probably would have won the game.

From Liberty's website. http://www.liberty.edu/flames/index.cfm ... 8&TeamID=6
With the loss, Liberty falls to 9-19 overall and 5-9 in the Big South. The Lancers move to 6-22 on the season and 3-11 in conference play. The Flames are now 0-11 all-time against Longwood inside Willett Hall.
Although we only lost by one point and mounted a huge comeback in the second half, would this be considered our worst loss of the season, considering that our opponent was 5-22 (2-11)?

No. I mean look at who we were playing! We haven't won there the last 11 times. To keep it this close, and to be only a couple of free throws, missed shots or turnovers away from victory should be applauded!

Someone fire this joker in Layer already. Likely a 20 loss season. Classy and nice guy, but classy and nice guys that don't recruit well and lose to Longwood shouldn't have a job. Longwood is easily one of the worst teams in DI this year.

Yes, we should have won, yes Longwood is a bad team, and yes things need to change. But it was as exciting a game as I have watched in a while. Carey was lights out most of the game and Marshall's last 2 minutes were pretty unbelievable.

Seriously, that Carey guy was taking some shots that every time it left his hand I was saying "what an idiot" and then it would go in. It was making me angry to watch because it was just such dumb basketball, but it just kept going in.

And who would replace him for the rest of the year?

Exactly. If you asked that question this time last year it would be a no brainer. Eaker is your interum coach and probably gets serious consideration for the permenant job.

There is no way they make the move before the season is over with Joyce and Walton as the options for HC and the other as the only assistant. I can´t see how that possibly makes us better this year, and I really don´t see either of them getting the job going forward.

Don't be so hard on Coach Layer. Even the great RD lost there, and I bet it was by more than one point: can BJ or somebody look up that score?

Youd be correct Cider...here are the scores from Liberty's games with Longwood AT Longwood under RD...all losses of course (Jeff Meyer btw):

2/15/2007: 76-70
11/30/2005: 88-75

I should have clarified. Fire him right after we lose in the first round of the big south tourney. Wouldn't make sense to fire him right now, sorry for the confusion.

I think I can say without even checking the records that this was the closest we have come to beating Longwood in Farmville.

A few things.

One, does it really matter if we don't win a game the rest of the year? Point being, why wait on firing Layer? There's a very real possibility that we don't win a game the rest of the season with him staying as HC. If this doesn't have a negative impact on our future, I don't see a problem with him being let go today.

Two, would it make sense to let him finish out his contract? We're obligated to pay him next year. Additionally, I wonder if JB's hands are full with the conference expansion and everything. If we did receive an invite say in August or September, we could use next off-season to get a better coach than what we could hire this season. I would rather offer a coach next off-season the opportunity to coach a Sun-Belt, C-USA (insert conference here), than offer a Big South team to a coach this off-season. So, I could actually see the positive aspects on waiting a year to get rid of Layer.

Three, if Layer is terminated, that can't be the only thing to change. I've stated several times the attitude among many Liberty fans is quite disturbing. It's obvious the team is beyond terrible right now, yet some of you still live in delusional land and swear that we're "improving." If Layer goes, this attitude has to go as well. We need to be realistic about where our program is when we evaluate our coaches and hold them to the standards of our football, baseball, and wbball programs.

So many schools are blindsided with "firing our coach is the answer." Yet, when in realty there are several other aspects about the organization that need to change. I would love to see the culture of Liberty basketball do a 180 and become a program that is results based, both on and off the court.

I believe its been said already, either in this thread or another one close by, that firing Coach Layer is NOT an option right now because of the options available that would have to step in and replace him on an interim basis to finish out the season. If any changes are made it wont happen until after the season is over and Im also guessing that is the thought of JB's office at this point as well

The Longwood Lunatics have to put Longwood in their name because they know they'd never compare to The LUnatics.

I'm done.

I don't see any reason to fire him at this point in the season. Let everything play out and fire him immediately following the Big South tournament. There should be a decent coaching pool to choose from as long as they decide to transition quickly. Hopefully they don't wait around and decide to fire him after the better candidates have already been hired by other schools.

Exactly. If you're going to make a move, it has to be very fast. If they wait around for a couple months, they may as well let Layer have another shot next year.
