Liberty, of course, is the defending conference champion (6 out of the past 7 years), going undefeated in conference play the last 2 years, and here is our starting lineup:

Big South Conference CHAMPIONS! Another 6-0 undefeated season in conference:
Liberty over Presbyterian, 235-115
Liberty over Longwood, 150-75
Liberty over High Point, 130-20
Liberty over Winthrop, 465-40
Liberty over Coastal, 150-80
Liberty over Gardner-Webb, 170-100

And here was our favorite question of the tournament:
"He cited the Terri Schiavo case as part of America's 'death syndrome,' amd blamed 'abortionists,' feminists, the ACLU, and others for September 11. The Supreme Court case ruled against this man in his suit of Larry Flint's Hustler magazine. In his hometown he founded Lynchburg Christian Academy and hosted the Old Time Gospel Hour at Thomas Road Baptist Church. For 10 points--name that founder of the Moral Majority."

BJ, a great story that I just learned this weekend is that our freshman captain (a National Merit Finalist) had both Liberty and Gardner-Webb on his short list of potential colleges, but LU offered him more academic and Honors Program scholarships, so he chose us over the other Baptist school from his home state of North Carolina.

The Quiz Bowl coach at Gardner-Webb recognized him as "the one that got away" and came to LU.

Cider Jim wrote:We have confirmed 5 new Quiz Bowl recruits for the fall semester, all of whom are National Merit Finalists who boast an average SAT of 1400. This promises to be our best recruiting year yet.

Freshmen Team
1. Abigail Brubaker--NMF English major from Leola, PA (literature, drama, pop culture, music)
2. Aaron Hultstrand--NMF Math major for Bismark, ND (math, history, science, literature, sports)
3. Greta Hanks--NMF music/Spanish major from Garner, NC (music, history, geography, literature)
4. Doug Stevens--NMF undecided major from Wade, NC (literature, history, & religion)
5. Gabrielle Killough--NMF English major from Montgomery, AL (literature, philosophy, pop culture)

Historically, our weakest areas have been music, drama, geography, and pop culture, so this freshman class should immediately be challenging our two varsity teams for playing time.

Not missing much here. Pop culture of any considerable taste died when American Bandstand was moved to LA from Philadelphia in 1964. Someone should have seen that one coming!

At any rate, congrats to LU Quizbowl once again!

The three games were much closer this year that what they have been in the past, but the varsity and JV teams still took 2 out of 3 from the faculty team on Thursday night in our annual Faculty Scrimmage:

Game 1: faculty 425, varsity 375
Game 2, JV team 270, faculty 260
Game 3: varsity 525, faculty 335

In the first game (that we should have won), we lost on a science question that even I knew! :banghead
