Officials from Liberty University and the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company reached a contract agreement Friday on a GLTC-run shuttle bus service for the LU campus.
The signed agreement calls on GLTC to provide six buses starting Jan. 15.
“We’re excited about it,” said Jerry Falwell Jr., LU’s vice chancellor. “We’re optimistic that it’s going to work well for Liberty and GLTC. We’re anxious to get moving with it.”
LU will pay $75,000 a month for the service under a contract that runs from January to May.
At the end of four months, the amount paid to the bus line will be raised or lowered based on GLTC’s actual costs in providing the service, Falwell Jr. said.
If both parties are satisfied with the working relationship at the end of four months, the contract can be renewed indefinitely.
“I think this is a great step forward,” said S. Lee Beaumont, LU’s director of auxiliary services. “We look forward to getting this thing into operation. I think this is going to be a great partnership.”
GLTC General Manager Mike Carroll said the shuttle service could be an important first step in building a long-term relationship between GLTC and LU.

Under the agreement, GLTC will provide campus bus service from 7 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday; from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday; and from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The bus routes have eight stops and will serve the university’s main, north and east campuses.
Three of the bus stops will be sheltered.
LU must approve any ads placed on the sides of the buses.

Currently, the school is running its own shuttle bus service, which is providing transportation for about 25,000 riders per week.
The campus-run shuttle service transports passengers from the school’s main campus to its north campus and to dorms across U.S. 460 from the main campus.
Liberty reserved the right to continue running its own buses, if necessary.
Under the agreement, GLTC will be the exclusive outside transportation vendor for the campus, Falwell Jr. said.
The campus shuttle started earlier this fall.
Barry N. Moore, LU’s vice president of university relations, said he hopes the agreement with GLTC is the first step in a broader transportation plan.
Moore, who spearheaded the negotiations with GLTC, signed the contract along with GLTC board of director’s president Jack Hellewell. The meeting took place in a conference room on the LU campus.
Moore said LU wants to discuss additional routes that would transport students and workers on and off campus after the first of the year.
Those routes also would service shopping centers and apartment complexes where there are heavy concentrations of LU students and employees.
“The first phase is intra-campus ridership,” Moore said. “The second phase will be bringing new routes to and from the city.”

LU Campus Transit Enhancement Update
Auxiliary Services
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
Beginning next semester, we will be making a number of exciting enhancements to the campus transit system:
Expanded weekday operating hours
Buses will run until midnight on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We will further expand Friday service to 1 AM, and Tuesday service will stop at 10 PM. After 5 PM, we will continue to use one bus on the Red and Blue routes each.
Service on Saturday and Sunday
Bus service will operate between 8 AM until 10 PM on Saturday and Sunday. One bus will operate on each of the routes the entire day.
Wednesday Campus Church service
We will run an additional 3 buses immediately before and after the Wednesday service. These three buses, along with the two buses running the evening routes, will utilize the existing Red and Blue routes.
Paratransit service
Eligible students, faculty, and staff can utilize this service free of charge for service that originates AND terminates on (does not leave) the university campus (including TRBC and LCA). Please visit the website below for more information on how this service can work for you:

Partnership with GLTC
Lastly, Liberty University and the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company (GLTC) have partnered to provide the best possible services to accommodate the tremendous growth and changing needs of the University. The expertise and resources that GLTC brings will provide Liberty University with the means of developing new and improved services to the University community. GLTC is in process of developing route maps and schedules, which will be available early in the spring semester. In addition, all buses that will be utilized by GLTC will be handicap accessible. GLTC will also be making a number of enhancements to the existing bus stops as well.
If you plan on not bringing your vehicle back for the spring semester, please remember to return your parking sticker to LUPD before the end of January so that you will receive a refund on half of the annual vehicle registration fee ($150).
It is our hope that these enhancements will make the transit system even more beneficial to you. We will continue to add and modify services to better serve the campus community through the rest of the academic year. Please continue to check the Splash page for service announcements.

Auxiliary Services
LU Transit now offers transportation to several Wards Road locations. The route consists of these stops:
1. Campus East Clubhouse and East Dorm 24
2. Main Campus, Dorm 5 and Dorm 28 (the Keyhole)
3. Wal-Mart
4. Wards Crossing Shopping Center (Best Buy, Subway and Target)
5. Wards Crossing Shopping Center - WEST (Kohl's and Old Navy)
The bus will service this route every 20 minutes, starting from 2pm in the afternoon to 10pm at night.
