I'm not exactly sure how this works, but there was a ton of speculation that Jones would redshirt this year anyway. If that's the case obviously he'd be on the roster. However, here is some thing that I've always wondered about and it brings up a point about Meeks being a preferred walk on as well. Meeks and Jones are both LCA grads. They can get the LCA scholarship. I think we've talked about this before in terms of you not being allowed to give athletes non-athletic scholarships so I don't know what that means for Meeks. But for Jones, he could just not be on the team for the fall semester, freeing up a scholarship, but still be getting a free education during his "grey shirt". I'm sure there's got to be limits to his participation though, right?

I think we are overthinking some things. Remember Paco Varol was kicked off the team, Marques Jenkins quit and so did another O lineman (forget his name). Add the graduating seniors and the kids that left or lost schollies during the christmas break and your darn close to 25 (counting the transfers & signees).

Grant and Chase Griffiths are the two that would be nice to have, especially Grant. He seems like a good kid and is very intelligent (duke and stanford were after him) so you wouldn't think it could possibly be grades or trouble.

I really like what they are doing in recruiting. Seems like they are targeting a higher number of kids that fit the University and that have talent (unlike basketball). Really like the size up front, we have a chance to have the most dominating O line we've had since Pinigis, Ausberry & Sene. Really like Newman, Parker, Scott & Fritts as well. Newman really looks like he could an even better Brent Vinson. Maybe those injuries were a blessing in disguise. Having Boyd and Fogg to tutor all these young guys at their positions could really be beneficial. The only spot we may get hurt at is LB since we really only signed 1.

Somewhere Haize & ballcoach are less than pleased with six Texans instead of six Seminole District kids in the class. :I chortle audibly.:
ballcoach is more a Dogwood / Gretna guy. I am happy with the handful of 'local" players on the squad. Of course who could blame them for wanting to get out of Texas! :)

LB should not be a problem. Remember we were stocked at that position because Rocco used the 3/4. We have 10 on the Spring roster (including Mayo, who is being switched to LB from safety). Some real studs in Sigmon, D Griffiths and Hyland, and I think Mayo is going to be really good there as well.

Reported back home that Issac Brown will be signing to play football at Liberty. Must be a preferred walk on since he didn't come across yesterday. I'm pretty sure that he is the son of Todd Brown a former teamate of Turner back in the day.

Well if they arent from the world beating Dogwood District (which will cease to exist after this spring season), then they must be terrible...at least in your view...right PH?

I agree but lets not start to get ahead of ourselves here. While these recruits look great on paper and the few strategically selected video clips making up a highlight film doesn't mean they are going to be the "anchor" of Liberty's football team nor should anybody be speculating such. I can recall like comments regarding every recruiting class for the past few years and many of those players left for various reasons; I wonder the real reasons why? While every year the recruits are a good looking class on paper and film, time will tell if the TEAM wants to successfully propel itself into the FBS (which by the way has been one of the big "carrots" for recruiting for several years now) and have winning seasons. Also, while I am cautiously optimistic about TG we have to softly remind ourselves that Kansas is playing right now with his recruiting classes while the coach there. So - to end this comments we will see if the good Lord will bless us with Liberty's goals in football and congratulate these young men and these exciting times, who will undoubtedly call LU and the FOC home for the next 4 - 5 years!!

Alright alright...to answer the question, looking at their highlights (I think every one of the threads on here has one) I like Fritts and Macon to be the closest to seeing the field right away. I think I called the latter AA 2.0 once he gets into Coach Gillespie's training (this will be the first class to use the sand pit too I think).

As far as the WRs go, one thing we really lacked especially after Ferguson went down, was a serious vertical threat in the passing game. With PK gone, we bring back Glover, Francis, Henderson, and Pratt as upperclassmen. Peterson really was the only one of the freshmen from last year to see significant time and that was after Ferguson went down. will be interesting to see how Faison and McCarter work into the mix as well as Shells (who is coming off an injury himself if memory serves). Fritts will have a chance to earn his way into the rotation, and Parker could be a nice Wes Welker type option in the slot as well.

For the QBs, with Hudson gone and Benedetto sitting out a year, I would not be surprised to see them give Masha a shot at earning the backup nod behind Woodrum next summer. Shashaty will have his opportunities to solidify his standing in spring ball but if this kid is as good as advertised, itll be a very good battle for #2 come July.

Not sure about Brown because Im not sure what position he is coming in at

I knew this year there would be no Dogwood players signing with D1 teams. One Dan River player signed with Cornell, that's only one I know of.

What is this about Dogwood ceasing to exist after spring season. I don't think the Dogwood District is going anywhere. I do know that VT and UVA are looking at some Dogwood players who are underclassman. I wonder if they are on LU's radar screen ?

Oh oldflame, so short sighted all the time. Im talking about the future. Of course we are well stocked for this year. Most of these recruits will redshirt and should.

What I was referring to was the VHSL changing to a new classification system starting in 2013, realigning all the schools in VA into 6 classifications and I think 48 "conferences" so the districts as we know them wont be around after the current school year

That is true, I had forgotten that. They are going to conferences instead of districts. I have no idea who will be in which conference. Conferences will be identified by a number

good to get a LB in there...we are super experienced in the second level going into this season so having another young player that can be developed is a good thing

Oh jinxy, you are so quick to judge. It´s a matter of numbers. We only get 65 schollies in FCS. There are 23 starting positions (allowing one for all specialists) In our current system 3 of those 23 are linebackers. Thats 13%, so about 13% of your scholarships can go to linebackers. That would be 8 or 9. With the 2 LB we have now signed, if everyone on the Spring roster returns, we will have 12. A couple of those are walkons, but I´m pretty sure at least 10 are on scholarship. We can´t afford any more LB on the roster without sacrificing at other positions.

IMHO, the position we are thinnest at is QB. Yes, we have a lot of confidence in Woodrum, but he is one hit away from a season ending injury, which would leave us with 2 kids who have never taken a snap and Henderson in reserve, who has had a few snaps as a wildcat. That is scary IMHO.

Pretty much every team in America is screwed if their starting QB goes down. It's a fact of football which is why the rules baby them so much. What QB that is good enough that we would feel confident if Woodrum went down would sit behind him for 3 years?
Are we back?

Nice! Here is to hoping we can live bot free.
