There is nothing surprising or new for most anyone who has been paying much attention to Hammond. But it certainly gives a strong overview of all that went wrong from Hyles to Schaap and their disciples in churches across America.

Sad story. No surprises, unfortunately. My home church growing up, Gospel Light Baptist in Walkertown, NC, was a huge Hyles backer. Hopefully this situation leads to widespread changes nationwide.

Mine growing up in Morgantown, WV was and still is, so far as I know. I don't think any of this changes things enough, or even much at all. IFB's despise the Catholic church, yet they have an organizational model much like it: listen to the M.O.G. and him alone for your divine leadership, priesthood of the believer notwithstanding.

Unilateral and unchecked leadership will continue. Demeaning women will continue. And that will always be a recipe for disaster.

You say that like its a bad thing! :D I will say be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water. I know of a couple HAC pastors who, while being a lot more Fundamentalist then I, are still good people who preach to those in need.

I am sure there are some great people at FBS Hammond but man, how could one be part of a church with such a long history of cover up? I don't get it.

the first 15 years of my life was spent in independent fundamental baptist churches. I wasn't a fan then and am even less of a fan now. I am sure there are good hearted people in these churches but they are still being taught a version of the gospel that simply isn't right.

Legalism is not something a new testament church should embrace.

Seducing a teenager by telling her it's what Jesus wants. Good one.

Former First Baptist Church of Hammond pastor Jack Schaap’s affair with a 17-year-old girl last summer not only wasn’t wrong but was desired by Jesus Christ.

That’s what he claimed in one of several letters he wrote to the victim during his crime, couching the sexual relationship as part of her personal salvation and something Jesus Christ wanted.

Without sufficient oversight, the pastor in such a church literally loses his mind. When he said those things, Im willing to believe he actually believed they were true. Doesn't justify any of it at all, just saying.
