you should be able to say "you suck" Explain how that is wrong. The other team does not take that into consideration when evaulating the student body. They are already upset they are getting beat, it really doesn't bother people, unless its personal jokes comparing to the UMD fans and JJ Reddick haters

It's the same reason Dr. Bell doesn't allow us to say "That team sucks" in his class. The word means something completely different to him than it does us. That's the only reason I understand them asking us not to say it.

Now I for one can't be called an old time fundy, but I have never equated "Cheering" by how much and how loudly you can berate the other team or the officials. It seems like that is the STANDARD at LU games. (Especially during basketball season)

I can relate to all of this. I am a pretty calm guy, but get me around a basketball game and I change into this other thing (the type of thing that does the stuff all of you are talking about). I just saw it as a good time. I loved the Radford games when the 'redheads' would come into our place. We would go back and forth the whole game. Some personals were exchanged, but when it was all over, we would shake thier hands and tell them to have a safe trip home. We still had RA's come up to us and tell us to knock it off. COME ON!!! Have a little fun!

You have to remember, to our parents' generation, "you suck" means a completely different thing than it does to us. That's why they don't like us using the word "suck" when we are yelling.

I agree with Jon on the "suck" issue, but for different reason. We were asked specifically in a memo from the Athletic Department NOT to use the phrase "you suck" so to us, that was all the justification that was necessary. Since the first or second game(after the memo was released) we quit using that phrase out of respect for our AD, not because it's right or wrong. That being said, even while we used that phrase in the first and second games we were completmented by the dean of men and dean of women for conducting ourselves in a responsible yet productive way.

Berating the other team is a staple of sports...on the field, off the field, before and during the game it's taking place. Sports, for those of you who haven't figured it out yet are competitive...and these are college sports, virtually one of the highest levels of competition, so the the competitiveness is going to be even greater than on other levels. We're not saying anything these players aren't hearing at other schools, as a matter of fact, I'd be willing to bet we're on the mild end of what they hear. Some people at this school over-spiritualize EVERYTHING....and it gets so old. Come of the high-horse and stop looking for the wrong in everybody else. If you are offended by us berating the other team - go complain and get laughed at.

As far as the facebook instance Jon, be careful..you don't know the whole story. The words I told you that Kenny Harper said came unsolicited, so don't make me out to be a bad guy here. The account was closed down because it got sexual, and we weren't willing to take it that far.

Maybe you guys should break up into groups and just pray silently for the other team - you know ask God to cause the opponent to have mental errors, fumble, throw interceptions. Geeez it is a football game what are you all thinking - hollern' and yelln' and teasing the other team. Sometime ask a true Notre Dame fan how to sing the Michigan fight song. Be prepared it is "R" rated. Oh and A.G. - its not cheering that leads to dancing - its having sex standing up that leads to dancing. That's why Baptists are agn' it.

The fact that this discussion even exists is why LU will never come close to rivaling the Tech or Hoos experience...until there is a mentality/atmospheric shift on the campus. The "Come to our games, spend your money at our concessions, give us a donation and have fun, but not too much fun--you may only participate in the kind of fun that we can regulate with metaphysical rules because we can't let you have more fun than we had back in our day here" mentality is detrimental to the cause of trying to build a vibrant fan experience. I'm not advocating that every chant needs to be laced with profanity, but the false piety is silly and can be somewhat saccharine and downright annoying at times and is a part of why Christians are constantly lampooned. (Que "suburbia has killed the church" music now.)
