There's a picture of Sandy, late Saturday, to give some idea of its scope. As of now it has broken the record for largest Atlantic hurricane when you measure by diameter of gale force winds (1040 miles). This might literally be a once in a lifetime storm.

From the meteorology department from my place of employment:
 Sandy is a very large expansive storm with a large wind field of 35-40mph winds.
 She moves onshore Monday evening near or just north of Atlantic City, NJ.
 Very significant outages will occur from Boston to the DC area.

Richmond metro area Impacts and timeline:
 Winds 15-30 mph with gusts 30-40 mph today thru mid day Monday.
 Winds in the Richmond area will range from 25-40 mph and gusts to 50-55 mph in the evening.
 Monday morning commute should be ok. Tuesday morning could be interesting.
 Peak threat for winds will be 6PM Monday thru 9AM Tuesday.

It's dropped to 50 around DC, winds are a sustained 20-25 already, it's been raining heavy since about 6:30, and we're still supposedly 15-20 hours from the real storm beginning. They're telling us 3-7 days without power, and to plan for the longer total, as they likely won't be able to start doing repairs for 24-36 hours after power goes out. This is not going to be fun.

Sorry to hear that, except I can't hear it because my ears keep popping. Fighting a stupid month-long cold and having a gigantic pressure sucking hurricane off the coast is killing me.

I'm going to head down to the beach to get some photos after the morning tide subsides, since I can't leave my neighborhood when the water level rises over 4.5 feet above sea level.

Areas like Bristol and the Mountain Empire will get snow, so really the only place not getting much is Lynchburg and Roanoke. Except the strong winds which are yet to come.

Yeah, they're having blizzard warnings out in the western mountains from a hurricane. This has to be an extremely rare occurence.

Atlantic City is under water.

A ship sunk off the coast of NC with 2 of 16 crew missing.

My guess is potential liability. If they held classes today and the storm hit and some students got injured or killed walking to class or waiting for the bus or something, parents affected would probably sue because they didnt take safety measures or something...yeah it sounds silly but that is the best I can figure from it
