Awful. New low for in-game music. Let us sing a song at Liberty University about delusional kids being bullied and resorting to gun violence in schools. Because that's what I think about when I think of Liberty University.

What's the big deal? I don't get why anyone would have an issue with this song.

Robert's got a quick hand.
He'll look around the room,
he wont tell you his plan.
He's got a rolled cigarette
hanging out his mouth.
He's a cowboy kid.

Yeah! He found a six-shooter gun
in his dad's closet, with the box of fun things.
I don't even know what,
but he's coming for you. Yeah, He's coming for you!

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, outrun my gun.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet.

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, outrun my gun.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet.

Daddy works a long day.
He be coming home late, and he's coming home late.
And he's bringing me a surprise.
'cause dinner's in the kitchen and it's packed in ice

I've waited for a long time.
Yeah the sleight of my hand is now a quick-pull trigger.
I reason with my cigarette,
Then say, "Your hair's on fire, you must have lost your wits, yeah?"

(Run, Run, Run, Run. Run, Run.
R-Run, Run, Run.
R-Run.
R-Run, Run, Run.
R-Run.
Run, Run.
Run, Run.
Run, Run, Run.)

I mean, I like CCR. But the students don't know who CCR is. And whether you like it or not, this is what they listen to. You've got to keep them interested with what they know.

But I never heard anyone complaining when they played brown eyed girl at the baseball stadium...

I was wondering after going 0-3 if they'd show up. And they still did. They simply relate more to newer music than they do older music.

Besides, they sing about prostitution every 3'rd quarter already.

Making love in the green grass ≠ shooting kids. I don't have a problem with the song, but I'm shocked that Liberty is playing it.

What song are they playing that's about prostitution? Roxanne?

Fair enough. And don't stop believing but we've talked about that on here before.

Oh, ok. That one's not explicitly about prostitution, but it isn't much of a stretch to interpret it that way.

From the little research I've gathered, Mark Foster of "Foster the People" was "irritated" by school bullying and senseless violence and wanted to express his thoughts on the subject, from the point of view of the depressed kid being bullied.

Any logical, rational thought with regards to the song stops there. This is not a Vietnam protest song or a school bullying awareness rallying cry. You have in this song the glorifying of gun violence in schools and the "band" even goes so far as to somehow make it all sound catchy, as much as I hate to admit it. Imagine a whole slew of 12-18 year old kids singing -

"You better run, better run, outrun my gun.
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet."

throughout the halls of their respective schools. I find it disgusting.

In light of Columbine, Aurora, and Virginia Tech hitting so close to home I am shocked we are playing a song about gun violence in schools at our football games. Do you think Tech would ever think about playing a song as awful as this one?

At the end of the day "prostitution" as incredibly loosely described in Don't Stop Believing is a mutual act between two consenting adults. This song by Foster the People depicts gun violence in schools. How the two are even remotely similar just goes to show the lack of maturity and understanding of all things logical by many on this board.

I've been dismayed by many of your comments on this board, and have for the most part remained quiet in my responses, or lack thereof. But to this comment I must reply. You don't understand why anyone would have a problem with Liberty University playing a song that glorifies gun violence in schools? Have you completely lost your mind, or are you just so numb to the mainstream media pop culture parade that you don't even notice anymore?

Nevermind the Christian beliefs of our school, how about the fact that Virginia Tech happened not more than 100 miles from here and featured a delusional young killer much like the one described in this song?

Look I am a student here, and part of the demographic we're trying to reach with this song. But people here at Liberty are smarter than that. We don't need songs about gun violence in high schools booming out over loudspeakers at our football games. We have taste, we have class (some of us....ahem...adam42381), and we're fine with the classics like Brown Eyed Girl and Don't Stop Believing and so on and so forth.

I don't know what is worse, the fact that we played the song, or the fact that Adam42381 can't seem to find anything wrong with it?

In simplest layman's terms possible for you to understand -

A kid brings a gun to school and shoots kids with it.
We're playing it at Liberty and singing along to it.

at the risk of continuing this thread... some of you people make me feel like I'm reading that Fundamentalist Forum.

I would say only that college kids deserve more credit than we are giving them.

do you really believe they go out and live there lives based on the lyrics of some pop song?

my 4 yr old loves that song and I'm not scheduling him for a visit to the shrink. lighten up.

EDIT: and to those that ARE students... I don't know what to say. 10 yrs from now when you're not in the Liberty bubble maybe you'll have a different perspective. Then again, maybe not.

We play worse at our high school ministry events.

Would you rather us go back to playing Family Force 5 about twenty times a game?

Logic, I don't see how him singing about his experiences endorses it. This is probably what he wanted to do inside, yes, but did he actually act it out? There's lots of things we think and say. But usually we do not, right? Ever wanted to punch someone? Well have you?

I also have the feeling all the schools you have mentioned have played that song. I'll ask my Tech friends when I see them next week.

I do agree with you on the whole prostitution thing though. The only thing that bothers me as far as Liberty playing it would be the cigarette references, but then again, I really honestly don't care either way. It's a catchy little song, and regardless of the lyrics, that's why it's being played.

As for adam's comments, I think he is a disillusioned from some of the things our school believes, but i still welcome his humor and his insight and perspective in more serious matters. Just I like I value your opinion although we rarely agree Logic!

Looks like I'm being voted off the island here. You know the case is a lost cause when even the 80's and early 90's grads think the song is OK.

I'll say it one more time and then I'll be done with the thread. It is a song about gun violence and shooting up kids in a school...And the only thing you can see wrong with it is the reference to cigarettes?

there's nothing wrong with disagreement. You're entitled to your opinion and I- mine.

Apparently my sarcasm did not come through. I posted the lyrics thinking the sarcasm would be obvious. Clearly I was not thinking logically. Do you see what I did there or should I explain that too?

While I'm not offended by it (or by much else for that matter), I am shocked that Liberty is playing the song.

I loved this song when it came out but then my wife (who is a school teacher) told me the words and now I have to agree I dont think it has a place at LU games or in my personal playlist.

The argument of "this is what the kids listen to like it or not" or "all the kids like it" doesnt really work for me. If you just think about something like this rationally, there really isnt to much sin that people dont enjoy or like...but obviously we still shouldnt do it. You just have to be careful about that type of mentality because before you know it, it will find its way in more and more of your thinking.

Not to mention our student body is known for singing the lyrics for songs that play...hearing thousands of kids in unison singing this would make me cringe a bit.

Agree with PA...there is no need to rally the people and torch the school over a song.

As for the students singing along, personally I think hearing the students croon "Don't Stop Believing" in the third quarter might actually make a nice tradition

Agreed...I was referring to when Jerry Sr said that if the school was "becoming liberal" (or something I forget), that the students had permission to rally together and torch the school

About the song choice, I thought it was a little weird when I heard it, but I got over it 10 seconds later.
