You're wrong, illogic. Plain and simple. Tech and UVA's campuses spread out as well. While not splitting through Tech, 460 runs near to Tech, so it's easier for all students (more importantly, commuter students) to get to class on time.

If I had to take the old 460 to LU every day, God help me.

Liberty has a beautiful campus with awesome improvements coming. It takes time for these things to happen. We visited many campuses in my daughters search for a university home the likes of: TCU, Texas, Baylor, Florida, Illinois, South Florida and a few others; and they all had beautiful campuses that took decades to get where they are today. And that being said they were not perfect. Like I said in another post on a thread that must have been deleted. Rome was not built in one day. You guys are still new kids on the block being only 41 years old; and yet you are already surpassing many schools three times your age. :!:

I live in the suburbs of Chicago (and yes my daughter is a freshman at Liberty) and around here the universities build buildings were ever they can squeeze them in. UIC (Illinois-Chicago) in downtown Chicago is a good example. I could not tell where the campus ended and the city began. The same goes for Marquette in Milwaukee. Liberty should be thankful for 460 because it is a vital link for the university to the rest of the world. Lynchburg would have benefited greatly from a interstate coming to it or a spur off of 81 in Roanoke coming your way. That being said 460 has a interstate quality to it at times; especially near Lynchburg.

During our college search we went to the University of Texas; and there interstate 35 runs on the east side of the campus with some of the campus bleeding over to the other side. That is where the baseball stadium is located and yet no one I talked to thought anything of it. I kind of see the same thing going on with 460 splitting main campus from east campus at Liberty...

Kind of a non issue. :)
Welcome to the board but as a Cubs fan and someone who attended college and seminary outside of Chicago I find your screen name highly offensive!
Nice UIC reference, you must have a Flames fetish. It also reminded me thay Illinois Tech also has the 'highway problem'. I'm sure there are more but your point is valid.
Don't be a stranger, but I'm sure it's hard to post dodging gunfire, crack Ho's and dealers on your way to US Cellular Field!

Thanks PH. Nice one...but it is also hard to get to US Cellular when the lights of the stadium blinds our eyes as it shines off of the World Series trophy. I know it was 7 years ago but at least its not been over 100. :nod :)

For all who don't understand...just a little friendly ribbing between Sox and Cub fans.

This boils down to what I keep saying time and time again. Some people want to be at a certain level but arent willing to go through the pains that it takes to get to them. As fans with vision/passion we want to sell out arenas, correct? We want to sell out stadiums seating 60,000+ right? There is a reasons why city planners put stadiums right off of interstates and major highways....you have to support the amount of traffic that these things will produce....we're fortunate to have 460, we're fortunate to own as much property on both sides of 460, we are setup in a perfect postion to grow and be approved for that growth when the govt has to get involved in approving or denying your growth. I'm really surprised this is even being entertained as much as it is.

We normally arent this bored this time of year.

bigsmooth wrote:do you realize the cost of what you are are dreaming of? its a wonderful idea, but its not needed. our campus is looking better every day and using JMU as an example was correct. the highway landscape does look better there on I-81 than 460. also LU is not a big time school...yet. JMU is a fine school so get off your high horse. Their football team is dang sure better than ours, and quite frankly academically they are better so we should compare ourselves to them to get better, which in time we will. you are the only one here crying about an "eyesore".
One big difference between the "big dig" and 460 would be that 460 is already below the level of LU and would just have to be covered up, not dug out. Woops, dang, they've already been digging out the walls to 460. Oh, well, they're good at moving tons of dirt after the bball field, eh?

And if I may respectfully speak softly so as not to tread on sensitive toes, the biggest part of why there is so little space on campus for educational buildings and parking is that we have two baseball fields, a soccer field, an expanding stadium and practice fields (with attending athletics only parking) right in the MIDDLE of campus, as opposed to at the edges of campus.

I love sports, and understand they have been central to the mission, but long term planning seems to be hard to find when it comes to laying things out. Like putting a music sound stage next to a railroad tracks...(???)

The former baseball stadium (from what Ive heard) will become the home of the softball team in 2014 with all the baseball goings on moving to the new stadium after it opens.

That'll probably give softball some pretty sweet new digs, provided they get to keep the facility beside the stadium.

I think (I may be mistaken) they get the whole enchilada. A lot can change since they aren't relocating til the 2014 season but I do believe they get the fieldhouse too

There never was a 'Master Plan' to the layout of LU's campus. In the early years it was Doc pointing and saying 'Put this here'. We have had a few 'Master Plans' but they always get changed. Usually by a lot.
Except, all building will have Jeffersonian columns.
As for the music stage by the train tracks, do you know how much that saved on sub woofers? :D

Suweeet!! I hadn't thought of that!! Only, this is for the Fine Arts sound stage, too... Perhaps those concerts will be timed around the train schedule so as not to coincide with the train's rumble (unless it's Wagner).

Along these same lines, will we open the tunnel and close the railroad crossing before the library is finished? Or are we going for a Folsom Prison Blues theme for those studying inside the library?

That drove me nuts when I first moved to Lynchburg. Wondered what yahoos were in charge of the signs. Once you figure out from a larger map these are just highways going through Lburg, it makes more sense, but still...

BJ PMed me and asked me to respond to this message but I don't see what the big deal is. We have plenty of room for educational buildings and are building a tunnel so that the trains won't have to sound their horns anymore. Did I miss something, BJ?

BJ said the question was whether the tunnel will be finished before the library. That is the goal but is dependent on how fast the railroad approves the newly proposed method for building the tunnel. It is still a moving target but the tunnel and the library should be finished around the same time.

Any thought of putting the library IN the tunnel? It would have no windows which would be great to eliminate distractions.

Think of the added ambiance it will give nature paintings and presentations!

That would be ideal as that way the library patrons wouldn't be blown away by the train horns. This is exciting!

Every time I post on here about Beej needing to take it easy because he's flipping out on something I'll get one immediately from him explaining why he was cranky. Haha, true story. Its like the guy has a google alert on here and when his name is mentioned he gets a email. I dont know how he manages to get anything done throughout a work day.

He's always good for some laugher though...sometimes its because I'm so baffled that all I can do is laugh...but there is laughter none the less
