Also: Show me something great I'm missing out on by living in the walled garden. What's out there in this world that I'm so oblivious of?

NFC payments? Because that's so ubiquitous right now.

Seriously. What is it that I can't do that's worth jumping platforms for?

Until today 4G LTE. Hey, I'm happy to see you iPhone folks beginning to catch back up. Enjoy the brief time of having a competitive phone for a few months before the long wait until the next gen. And if you seriously don't mind putting up with the wallet-pumping and the iTunes experience, have at 'em.

Like I said earlier, I recently upgraded to the iPhone 4 for $50. I debated waiting for the 5, but after seeing what they rolled out, I can wait. By the time my upgrade comes around they'll have the 6 out anyway. Also, weren't there rumors about an iPad mini being announced?

Hey, one phone a year is about all I can handle anyway. I'm not sure how much faster I'd want to upgrade hardware given the cost.

And as I've already pointed out in this thread, Apple waited for LTE chips to hit the power consumption vs. performance sweet spot. Same thing they did with 3G radios and I appreciated it.

And really? With the iTunes thing? Dude, now I know who's behind. You haven't had to use iTunes to use an iPhone in well over a year now. Seriously. No iTunes required. Get with it.

Sorry, I still have to use iTunes/App Store on my iPad and it is atrocious. I didn't realize that the iPhone had a separate deal.

You do not have to use iTunes with your iPad. The main feature of iOS 5 was completely removing the tether to iTunes.

You do still have to use it on your computer if you want to get the music, movies, etc. that you bought on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. So unless you never want access to that stuff on the computer, still stuck with having to use that crap software. Hopefully the new iTunes isn't crappy, but considering they are on version 10.7 of it and it's still crappy, I'm not getting my hopes up even the least bit.

while itunes is truly an awful program, i have an ipad and iphone (all work issued) and rarely have to use it since the advent of icloud. the only thing i use it for is to transfer ripped books to my devices.

you are talking to a guy who dislikes most apple products, the majority of apple users, and the whole phenomena but their phone is pretty usable and works. i've had enough experience with android and its buggyness to feel the iphone is much more stable (only because its software is exclusive to a few devices). the SIII is badass and probably even still a "better" phone but a guy used to an iphone is going to continue down the road. the s3, iphone5 are both better than my 3gs so either will be a huge upgrade. but i'm cheap so i'm getting the 4s.

1/2 our development team has moved to the galaxy. mostly because they are open source guys and like the idea of open software. 1 of them will probably move back to the iphone but the other guys are hooked. its all a crapshoot.

oh and chevy. all day.

Yeah, if you want to use the iTunes Store on your computer, iTunes is definitely how you'd interface with it. I mean, you could just use it as a downloader for your purchases and be done with it. Maybe that's too easy? How would you prefer to transfer that content to your machine?

I do acknowledge that iTunes on Windows isn't great though. My condolences for having to use either.

However, you're talking about something completely different than Sly. Sly implied that you can't use an iPad/iPhone/iPod touch without iTunes, and that's just not true. You can fully use any of those devices without owning a computer, much the less using iTunes.

Using iTunes as just a downloader doesn't work when some of the songs are DRMed and can't be played on anything else.

What I would prefer is a full web browser interface for the app store, like the Google Play Store or Amazon App Store. I'd much rather browse for music on there than fire up the junk known as iTunes. Haven't bought music from Google yet so I'm not sure how transferring works for that, Amazon generally has what I am looking for at a cheaper rate than both Apple and Google so I normally get it through Amazon. Plus with my Amazon credit card I get double awards points for buying from Amazon, so even if the same price I'd still buy music on Amazon.

I guess a full browser interface isn't innovative enough for Apple though.

For music downloads I use MP3Millions. I put $40 in my account and considering full albums cost about $1 I still have a ways to go. And they transfer over to my iTunes account

Music from iTunes hasn't been DRM'ed since 2009 and there are ways to remove the DRM, if you don't want to upgrade your files to the higher quality versions.
