Andy Murray sweeps Federer in 3 sets and picks the biggest stage of them all to get his first major win to get the gold medal in men's singles

Wimbledon IS the biggest stage. But winning Wimbledon is bigger then wining at Wimbledon IMO.

So youre saying that winning Wimbledon is bigger than winning an Olympic gold medal then

In Tennis. Yes. Like winning the World Cup is bigger then winning the gold at the Olympics in soccer.

Well I'll agree to disagree on that but maybe this is just the thing Murray needs, especially beating the same guy who beat him on that same court just a month ago

In certain sports the Olympics don't mean as much. Tennis is one. I would wager that if Murray had his choice he'd rather have the Wimbledon title and a silver the what he has now. To buttress my point, how many people watched and talked about the Wimbledon finals as compared to the Gold medal match up? Wimbledon finals wins that hands down.

Im sure he would...but like I said, maybe this is just the shot of confidence he needs, to come back on the same court where he lost a month ago to the same guy he beat today

THree Americans vs. Three Jamaicans in the men's 100 final tonight (plus a guy from The Netherlands and one from Trinidad). Justin Gatlin (coming back off a doping ban) is top qualifier

That is almost like saying an olympic gold medal is bigger than winning the World Cup in soccer.

Its a big deal but not nearly as big....it is just the way it is in some sports...

It's worth more points in the rankings based on what McEnroe said when I was watching Federer get destroyed.

When tennis was brought back into the Olympics, a major title like Wimbledon obviously meant more than a gold medal. However, the pendulum is swinging. The thing is, Wimbledon, the US Open, Roland Garros and the Australian Open are played every year. The Olympics is once every four. Many of the professional players, especially the up and coming ones, are starting to value the Olympics and representing their country more than maybe past players did.

And yes, the majors are worth more points than the Olympics. Its probably because the Olympics are not a part of the WTA/ATP tours.

The above discussion is exactly the reason that they need to contract some sports from the Olympics.
Here's my proposal-
1) Every sport that does not consider an Olympic gold medal as the highest honor is out of the Games (Basketball, Soccer, Tennis, Golf...even though it isn't even in until next time around)
2) Every sport that involves a horse is out.

Did not care for Mkayla Maroney's attitude. I knowshe was disappointed in 'only' winning the Silver but poor form on her part.

Maroney's body language even before competing was off-putting to me. I found myself rooting for the Romanian.

I will disagree with your inclusion of basketball in your banned list. With Tennis and Soccer there is already international competition. Players from all over the world compete at the highest level on the Tennis circuit. Same with soccer, especially with Euro Cup, the World Cup Qualifier tournaments and of course the World Cup. With Basketball the Olympics are really the only true International competition. There are the World Championships, but no one in America really cares. Basketball in the Olympics means a lot to teams who don't even make the medal round. Sure they got thrashed by the US but do you think that Tunisia and Nigeria were happy to be there? For other teams, like Lithuania, Russia etc, it's there one chance to take a shot at the big dog, USA.
As for horses, I just wish there was betting!

Just like with soccer, the FIBA World Cup is held in higher regard everywhere in the world BUT Americans. You don't hear David Stern calling for a 23-year age cap for FIBA, just the Olympics. Much bigger and more competitive field with 32 teams (starting with the 2014 competition) instead of the measly 16-team field for the Olympics. Olympic basketball is so moronic, it's insistence on having a team from each continent + the host country all but eliminates many of the top teams in the world like Greece, Turkey, Italy, and Serbia - all who rank in the top 10 in the world - in favor of teams like Nigeria (21) and Tunisia (32). It's not like we're talking about leaving out a bubble team in the NCAA Tournament, we're talking about leaving out several top ten teams, teams that would legitimately be competing for a medal.

I disagree to a point. While FIB Worlds are important to a lot of teams, it's just not that important to The Best team, which is Team USA. At the Olympics the best team brings their best effort because it is important to them. Now that has changed some since Coach K came on board and Colangelo has put a requirement on the commitment. Basically, if you want to be considered for the Olympic team you have to be available for FIBA as well.
Not sure what I think about this "World Cup" idea going forward or how it will all eventaully work out.

How it will eventually work out? The FIBA World Cup has been in existence since 1950...

What David Stern wants as far as a basketball world cup goes is already in existence - see FIBA World Cup - he just wants the NBA to get money out of it since the NBA gets nothing directly from the Olympics or FIBA World Cup.

The reason why Olympuc soccer doesn't matter as much is because it's not the best players. There restrictions on which players you can use. Plus, qualification is done with under 21 rosters. Not the real team.

Yes but by following what Stern wants it will essentially revamp FIBA. But again around the world a team/country will have bigger and better bragging rights by saying 'We beat Team USA in the Olympics" then they would in the Worlds.
