By the way, because of the way it was written, it wasn't just about gay marriage. I'm not getting into that debate on here because I will get tarred and feathers but yea.

It's not my state so I didn't have to read it. I just got tired of all of the kids at school saying if you voted no you voted for gay marriage.

The purpose of the amendment was to uphold the sanctity of marriage. Not specifically to block gay marriage, even though that’s a prime component of the wording.

Which is why the university needs students like you (and me, back in the day) who see life through eyes wide open, as opposed to eyes wide shut.

I know this. However, there are couples that are out there that are pretty much married except for the ring and everything. There are couples who were together for 10+ years and then when they got married things got screwed up. That ring changes people. I don't agree with gay marriage, I just don't think this was the way to go about things.

What benefits does a couple have in not getting married?

If you have been together for so long and can't handle the concept of a legal marriage, you may need to re-examine your relationship status anwyay, yes?

No. To some people it's a psychological thing. I'm not getting into this argument with people at Liberty because I will be called a demonic heathen who supports gay marriage before it's all over because that's what happens at LU.

Not if you discuss it in a mature manner with someone of decent intelligence.

There is no reason to make a broad, generalized statement that is demeaning to those with the criteria mentioned above. If you have a well thought out presupposition, regardless of if someone agrees with you, should be able to have a civilized conversation.

In a lot of states you enter a common law marriage after a certain period of cohabitation. I don't think that's the case in VA, but in a lot of states it's true.

Allen - 941,260 : 49.60%
Webb - 933,605 : 49.20%

Scorcho is right. After dating for "x" amount of years (different states vary) you are in a common law marriage. If something was to happen to one of the people in the couple, the other would have legal say over medical procedures and things of that nature. This was to get rid of that completely. Like I said, some people just are not comfortable with the word marriage. It's a psychological thing. They date for 7, 8, 10 years and don't get married. In most states they would be in a common law marriage around that time where they could have the legal rights over the other one if there was an accident or sudden death or something like that.
