95'th best? Really you think that's something to brag about? It could be worse I know but geez you sure know how to stretch facts.

Considering there are 120+ FBS schools, yes, I consider beating 20+ of them (including the well known ones I mentioned like Pitt and Rutgers) something to be happy about. Yes, we have programs on this campus right now that are BETTER than many Big East/MAC/SunBelt schools.

Stretch facts? The fact is we finished 95th in the country in the final Director's Cup Standings. How is anything I said stretching the facts?

JBock - you love to argue against me, but you have yet to validate any points you've ever made against me with any type of numbers whatsoever. Please kind sir, do share!

Yes. If our golf team finishes 10th in the country it is better than those that finish 11-321, no?

If you can't accept that first place is better than 2nd place then why even bother playing? Thankfully for the most part sport is not subjective!!

Yes, because everyone cares so much about golf. In fact, the dirty little secret is that we are making the move to FBS for golf and tennis. We are using football only as a ruse.

You do realize that the things that matter the most are Football and Men's basketball, right logic?

I am so happy we are having success in other places, but come on we can't even win the Big South in the 2 major sports and we are bragging how awesome we are?

This is the problem with a lot of fans in general they think much more highly of themselves then what is actually true. Which is the case here.

You can throw stats out and numbers and all that stuff but at the end of the day what matters in major college athletics is Football and Men's Basketball. I am sure some people will argue that, but they are simply kidding themselves.

Obviously I am aware that football and hoops run the show. You are basing our entire athletics department off of those two sports, while I am looking at it as a whole. Two different points of reference.

One point of view potentially makes money and brings in donors.
The other point of view gives you warm fuzzy's and boasts about 95th place

Then I suppose Jeff Thomas needs to share his secrets! He would be making 3.5 mil a year if he were a football coach.

Thomas's secret is that he has several Honors students on his golf team: they play "smart". Study

How? Why? How is Golf 10th in the country? Why can't others do it? Where is your vision Haize? :)

While I am proud of what many of the coaches on campus have done in the other sports including Shane Pinder, Jeff Thomas, Carey Green, Jeff Alder, (All of whom I consider friends), the true measure of success will always be Men’s basketball and Football as Haize and others have suggested. That in no way should diminish the accomplishments of our athletics program as a whole and the fact that we are in the top 100 is indeed an achievement.

However until Liberty begins to make noise in the post season in Football and Men’s Basketball, the athletic dept is going to be missing what is necessary to gain the national attention and respect we all feel we can get and that we deserve.

My opinion on a possible move to the CAA is that it would be a terrific move for the short term and be a nice bridge to the FBS level. It would add credibility to any accomplishments in ALL of our sports as the CAA is definitely a step up from the Big South. It is a very under appreciated conference in terms of competition especially in hoops and sometimes Football. Winning in the CAA will be tough but it can be done. I can’t speak for all the sports but I know Basketball would be up against a major up-hill battle. Middle of the pack CAA teams like Delaware, Drexel, JMU, Hofstra are all really tough. Having VCU and ODU out of the way really paves the way for Mason to dominate but it won’t be easy.

Football wise though, we all know our ultimate goal is FBS but an FCS move to the CAA short term would be ok in my book.

Agreed - I want to move up, but being in a better conference like this would be fun to watch and a good stepping stone.

The exciting part is, we can square off against several of these VA schools that will not play us unless they Have to.

Good stuff!
I'm really not leaning in either direction on this debate. LU could definitely play better competition in the CAA, but why make a pit stop? Why not make your next move your best move?
I wouldn't be mad either way; I just want to see LU dominating opponents in the near future.

Why stay in such a noncompetitive and poorly run conference like the Big South? I've supported SoCon or CAA from day 1, regardless of when we might get to make the FBS move. Getting away from the Big South is a positive move.

Funny thing is that it would seem that no conference currently wants us.

You have the vision of Mr Magoo! These conferences want us but are too shy to ask. Remember those roller skating parties in middle school where the girls are on one side the guys on the other and the girls skate around and pic someone to skate with? Same thing!
I have always thought a move to the CAA would be absolutely awesome. Especially now knowing there' a cadre of teams who have the same long term goals and vision we do. It will only enhance our appeal in moving to FBS and at WORST case we are in a totally awesome conference and drawing a ton of fans to our games.
