Hello, I am a long time liberty fan and I have for several years been reading flamefans online. I decided to post about a recent visit i had to liberty's campus last friday. I was staying at the wingate hotel and I came across a man in the lobby with a CAA colonial athletic conference hat and shirt on. It was a business man that worked for the CAA. He was working on paperwork and had his laptop going. I decided to post about this because it appear he was there to visit libertys campus and maybe the administration. I wonder now if we are looking at the CAA or the CAA is trying to get us to join.

First off, welcome to the site. We love fresh blood around here.

And thanks for the intel. The CAA is in fact looking at expansion and we make a ton of sense for them at a time when that league is very unstable.

Personally I haven;t heard a peep about any contact between the league and school.

Welcome to the board libertyforever! Thanks for sharing this information.

I've already shared my views on Liberty joining the CAA. If an invitation from an FBS conference tarries, I would love for Liberty to join the CAA.

Ironically, as academic as the CAA claims to be, they don't host a Quiz Bowl tournament like the Big South does.

Big brains?! :dontgetit

All joking aside, welcome to the board! I personally would love an invite to CAA or SoCon if FBS isn't in the near future!

According to a post on appfan.com, Liberty will be headed to the CAA with three other Socon schools...I think they were Davidson, Furman, and Elon.

I actually would be very happy with the CAA if JMU, Richmond, and W&M stick around, it would do wonders for basketball crowds. I think the football games would be a blast as well. Then hopefully we'll be able to move up to fbs with some of the other CAA schools as a group about 5 years in the future.

Please don't tell me you actually believe that...

Think about it. FBS ready. We're going to wait as long as it takes.

I agree jbock, that is probably what we will do but man I hope we're wrong. I realize the CAA isn't going to be what it once was but it is still better then the big south in football and basketball anyways. I don't know much about the other sports but I just don't understand just sitting around in the Big South just waiting for some FBS conference to come calling. It isn't going to happen anytime soon. If it was going to happen soon it would've already happened.

Just my opinion...

The CAA would make my heart flutter! Especially if there was an 'Understanding' that those schools interested would jump as a group in to FBS. Just sayin

I'm hearing CofC and Davidson to CAA, with offers already on table. If true, offers aren't usually made unless they WILL be accepted. Still trying to find second source to confirm.

If the CAA won't take us, do we try for the Southern Conference? I know, it's not the same since Marshall left, but is it still an upgrade from the Big South?

Regardless, would the CAA really be desperate enough to pick us up for, say, 3 years when they know first chance we get we're going FBS?

Besides, the supposed invitation was supposed to be given back in May or June for us by the CAA. IF those stories were even true.

I know in part of this you're joking, but yes, the SoCon is absolutely a step up overall from the Big South.

Before I knew FBS could be a real possibility in the near future (0-3 years), I would have given my first born to be in the CAA. In the last year or so, I have publicly stated we would not move to the CAA. Now, I’m not so sure. The only way our Admin agrees to a move to the CAA is if we know for a fact we will not be getting an FBS invite in the next 0-3 years. If that is the case, I say go for the CAA. It’s definitely better than the current Big South, and imagine the BSC w/o Stony Brook and/or Coastal.

Current CAA:
W&M
JMU
Towson
Delaware
George Mason (non-football)
Drexel (non-football)
Northeastern (non-football)
UNCW (non-football)
Hofstra (non-football)
Maine (football only)
New Hampshire (football only)
Richmond (football only)

How could we NOT move? We could create some great rivalries in this conference. Not to mention the possibility of moving up with JMU, Towson, and Delaware as a package deal as some point in the future. Also, changing some of these admin’s ideologies they have of us would go a long way for us in future realignment possibilities.

Non-football travel would likely be less than our current set up as our longest distances would be to Drexel and Northeastern, but those trips would be more than offset with trips to W&M, JMU, Towson, Mason.

Do you think APP State leaves the SoCon and joins the CAA?

Would Appy be willing to give the 1 million dollar exit fee? I know Liberty would. That's easy money for the CAA. If FBS is in the distant future, I would love to see Appy and Liberty in the CAA. It would still be the best football conference in FCS.

CAA Baseball/Basketball with CofC, Davidson, George Mason, William and Mary, JMU and maybe Appy State>>>>

As far as the supposed invitation given in may or June, if you read the post on Appfan from about 4 days ago it says that App State was invited but shunned the offer, still holding out hope for FBS. It says Liberty wil replace App Stat's offer to the CAA. I think, from appy's point of view, there's less of a difference between the Southern and CAA...and Appy already has had enourmous success at the fcs level and can schedule anyone thy want in the fcs level. For Liberty, the CAA would be an oppertunity to get home and homes with Richmond, W&M, JMU, Deleware, etc. In football and basketball. I think it may be the needed intermediate step...and that post falls in line with the timeframe of the CAA business guy coming here...I mean the whole thing is based on two message board posts, so there's no real evidence, but the timing fits.

I think it would be a no-brainer to move to the CAA if offered.

It's not looking like FBS is happening any time soon (unless admin. knows something we don't) and the CAA would put us on a bigger FCS stage as well as position us better for a National Championship. I think we join the CAA, make a deep run in the playoffs, and potentially win a National Title, we would have a lot more eyes on us in the FBS ranks. This isn't FBS, but it is a home run as far as I'm concerned.
