Yeah, but what IF we broke LU into 5 different teams. Think about it. We could use the money we save from travel expenses to help fund them. Then we would have all the TV and Radio rights and monies and we would be guaranteed a spot in the Champioship Game and a good shot at a bowl. All of which could help fund our other 4 teams!
Brilliant I say!

Georgia Southern will not join the WAC, even if invitation is extended....
GSU staying in FCS, Southern Conference for now
By NOELL BARNIDGE

Conference options

Did the Eagles have all of their eggs in the Sun Belt Conference’s basket? “I don’t know if we had eggs in any basket,” Baker said. “We reached out to them because, if you had to look geographically and financially, as far as the budgetary issues, it probably is the one that might work. I think it still remains that people want to have a competitive program. And it still comes down to how you’re going to finance it. If you increase your football scholarships to 85 (up from 63 in the Football Championship Subdivision), we’re going to have to increase our women’s scholarships in a proportionate number because of Title IX. It’s going to be a major economic move. It’s just not football, it’s an entire athletic program.”

The Sun Belt Conference appeared to be GSU’s best option at the FBS level, much better than the Western Athletic Conference, which would be a huge financial undertaking because of the travel involved.

Baker said GSU will not join the WAC, even if an invitation is extended, because it is not economically viable for the Eagles.

“The WAC has got some issues,” Baker said. “Right now they’ve only got two football programs and I believe five schools overall in the conference after this year.… They’ve been at the brink of being dissolved a few years ago and they came back from the abyss, but I don’t know this time if they can make that.”...

At this point, as far as I'm concerned it's 'Sun Belt or Bust'. With that said, Liberty needs at least 2 Sun Belt eastern schools to leave for C-USA.

I read one fan's opinion on another board about C-USA expansion and I tend to agree with his assessment. Paraphrasing of course, the fan said he feels C-USA will take a combination of: 1) Delaware & JMU, 2) MTSU & WKU, or 3) Georgia St. & FAU. Obviously any combination involving non-CAA or MAC teams and 2 Sun Belt Eastern schools may work in our favor (and App St.) due to Georgia Southern's current financial situation and present Title iX issues.

JMU as well has Title IX issues I believe. Delaware appears to be holding out for the MAC. They are a pretty far ways away from anyone else in the C-USA anyways... I could see us and App. State potentially being on their list. The locations would certainly be complimentary of other schools they have or recently acquired (ECU, UNC-Charlotte, ODU, LU and App. State). All within a 5 hr. drive or less of one another.

I think C-USA might expand with Georgia St and FAU simply because of their tv markets.
FAU would need a serious increase in student fees to subsidize a move to CUSA....they're 15.6 million dollar budget is 4 million lower than ours, and they would be the lowest in CUSA by quite a lot. Though perhaps a good fit due to markets, could they afford such a move?

@ Logic

That's a good question. If students and alumni know that C-USA is FAU's future home, students may not gripe with their student fees going up and alumni may not mind donating more money to see their Alma mater succeed. I think if FAU is not up to the task, Middle Tennessee St will be more than ready to step up.

The FAU leadership indicated during the last round of C-USA expansion that they didn't even get the time of day from Banowsky & Co. With FIU int he fold, the South Florida market isn't much of a need for C-USA right now. I believe Delaware is a lot higher on C-USA'a wish list than FAU or Georgia State. MTSU makes a great deal of sense as well.

MTSU was the backup plan in case ODU stayed FCS. Georgia State could make sense for C-USA. It's in the Atlanta market and within easy driving distance of Charlotte.

That is pure speculation on MTSU, Atrain.

Let's face it, neither MTSU or Georgia State is any real prize. Does the Nashville market pay any attention to Murfreesboro? Does anyone in Atlanta pay any attention at all to Georgia State?

C-USA has their primary markets nailed down. They'll pick who they feel adds the best value to the league.

The front page of the local paper said that Syracuse is paying a 7.5 million dollar exit fee to leave the Big East for the ACC, and they they would join a year sooner--in 2013.

Does that likely mean that the Big East will in turn take someone from another conference and that would trickle down and eventually help us get into an mid-major FBS conference (C-USA, MAC, Sunbelt)?

I've always thought the C-USA would be the best place for us, given the make-up of colleges/universities in the league and their successes on the field. A lot of the schools in that league have moved on up the ladder of conferences in recent years, which is ultimately our goal. It's 15+ years down the road potentially, but understand folks - the goal is to be at that level (ACC, Big 10, etc.).

Also, has anyone read up on Bill Carr's bio/history? It's pretty interesting to say the least, especially considering his close ties to the C-USA. It's pure speculation and I'm probably reading into it too much, but if he truly feels we are as prepared as we are then it makes one wonder if he mentions or would mention our name to any league(s) he has assisted or will assist in the future.

The "Pure Speculation," was based off of articles in newspapers back when ODU was still deciding on what to do. A Google search for them now will yield links to stories that are no longer posted on those various newspapers websites.

As for Georgia State, no one in Atlanta paid attention to them because they didn't have football. Now they have football, and if they're able to put a good product on the field they will be able to draw attention to themselves.

I'll tell you this about Georgia State. Until the president Fires the AD they will continue to have a culture of "just be good enough" in my three years as an employee there I experienced and heard many instances where the athletics department completely drops the ball. You think coaching problems and things we have a liberty are bad... just be glad you aren't at State. The Atlanta Market will not pay a lick of attention to Georgia St. until they put a winning product on the field. The apathy of the student body hasn't helped matters at all. Having the Dome as your home stadium is all well and good unless you can't get students to come to games. As for comparisons to GT, its apples and oranges. GT is like a giant good ole boys fraternity within Atlanta. The majority of supportersare caucasian and live ouside in the suburbs of atlanta and commute in to go to games. Unless you are an alumni or friend or family of alumni chances are you aren't going to go to a GT game. There is no such thing as a casual fan in Atlanta. Which is sad. Coach Curry will retire after this year at Georgia State and they will probably end up getting rid of the AD as well. That will be the critical point in the athletic department. If they can hire on staff members that understand the culture of atlanta and can market the team well enough and win games they just might surpass GT. if they fail to do those things you will be looking at the UAB of Georgia.

Case in point, except for BJ and a few others, I bet the majority of Flame Fans can't even tell you the mascots of both schools.

I agree, CUSA would be a prize if we could somehow get in. Baseball is already beating CUSA schools as we speak.
