Jeff Hurd is quoted by a couple media outlets the last few days saying a possible FCS deal of eastern schools could be put together in 2-3 weeks ... or it could not happen at all. The WAc situation is still a mess.

It sounds like we have a lack of leadership out west. Someone needs to step up and tell the WAC schools to put their big boy pants on and step up to the plate. Perhaps Jerry Jr needs to meet with the WAC presidents, AD's, and Jeff Hurd to show them how we do leadership Liberty style.

“In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.”
Theodore Roosevelt

Jeff Hurd - Don't let the "interim" label rob you of your testosterone. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get the WAC on board to save football. Inspire them to get on the same page. Show them why they need football. Better yet, do all of that while convincing them it was their decision in the first place.

Not really BYD. I just take it as more credible coming from him.

That would leave Liberty with the best overall athletics department in the Sun Belt in 2013....they really don't know what they're missing. Mediocre league with mediocre facilities, budgets, and athletic programs. The fact that they turned us down is rather insulting considering we're flat out better than their entire conference. IF that sounds arrogant so be it. Sour grapes? Perhaps, but show me a Sun Belt school with our potential, facilities, funding, etc.
Have we beat any Sun Belt teams in any MAJOR sport? I'm a big fan of Olympic sports but have we beaten any Sun Belt team in any sport, let alone the BIG ones?

Any resident stat gurus here? I don't remember anyone playing any Sun Belt schools this year but I suppose we could check the schedules.

I just think if football exist for the WAC in 2013 LU will join if offered a spot and nothing else is available regardless of other eastern schools.

I agree with your analysis but just for the record, William & Mary is a public school.

Good catch. It was privately founded, but it is a public research school.

It was hard to be publicly founded in 1693 :D

Well, ODU started as the Norfolk campus of W&M, so I guess we can say they've already agreed to move up if we want to stretch back to the founding.

Not really. Props to you for it, but because a journalist does his job doesnt mean Im sitting in my room stewing over it because you said it. It wouldnt have mattered if it was you or jbock or TTL (wonder where he is these days?) or me or Cider or Flame Convert or anybody from this board.

Or you could just always use common sense. I mean, clearly, W&M wants to go FBS. And if you believe that, it's snowing outside.

Interesting Article about Benson Trying to shake things up in the Sun Belt :

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr- ... ncaaf.html
On April 1, Benson emailed a powerpoint presentation to Sun Belt presidents/chancellors and athletic directors, laying out the league's various realignment options.

One slide listed 21 schools to be considered as "possible additions/replacements" — including Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Texas State, Utah State, UT-San Antonio, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Liberty, Charlotte, Old Dominion, Belmont, College of Charleston, Florida Gulf Coast, North Florida, St. Louis and Texas-Arlington.

"That was just to demonstrate that the Sun Belt had many options," Benson said. "We needed to think out of the box, but it was just an exercise in showing that the Sun Belt is in a good spot."

The same presentation included several maps of potential conference mergers — one of which was titled "Makes Too Much Sense" and proposed a 33-school superconference combining the Sun Belt, C-USA, WAC and Mountain West Conference.

"I had very quiet inquiries with (Mountain West commissioner) Craig Thompson and (C-USA commissioner) Britton Banowsky to see if, 'Hey, would you be interested?'" Benson said. "But that was dismissed quickly. No interest."

WAC: Decision needed in next 30 days

By BRIAN MURPHY — bmurphy@idahostatesman.com

Jeff Hurd has worked for the Western Athletic Conference for the past 27 years. Now the interim commissioner is doing his best to keep the beleaguered league alive for a few more.

With just four committed members for the 2013-14 season — Idaho, New Mexico State, Denver and Seattle — it is not an easy task.

The league would need to add at least six football-playing members to join Idaho and New Mexico State and sponsor the sport.

“The options are fairly limited when it comes to football,” Hurd said.

The league also needs at least three more basketball-playing members to meet NCAA requirements. Utah Valley, Cal State Bakersfield and Texas-Pan American have been mentioned as possibilities. Hurd declined to talk about specific schools.

“Some schools have to be convinced that we’re around for the long haul. We have to show we’re viable, have to show we’re sustainable,” Hurd said. “Overcoming the perception we’re not is difficult. It’s one of the obstacles as we move forward.”

Boise State, which is scheduled to move its non-football sports to the WAC in 2013, is among those schools. The Broncos are trying to get into the Big West, which is scheduled to vote on the school’s application before the academic year begins.

“I have to go on the assumption that Boise State will participate in the Big West in other sports as we speak,” Hurd said. “If we’re able to put something together that makes sense in the next 30 days or whatever that time frame is, I would still try to get Boise State to become a part of it.”

Hurd said it is vital that the WAC make its decision in the next 30 days for a number of reasons, including scheduling. The league holds its annual football media days July 26. Departing members San Jose State, Utah State, Louisiana Tech, Texas State and Texas-San Antonio will participate.

Hurd said the league wanted to be further along in its rebuilding process at this point, suggesting the league still has a “significant hill to climb.”

“The drop dead date is whatever the four remaining schools determine it is,” Hurd said. “The commitment to move forward and make this thing work is there, but it’s not going to be there forever.”

The WAC, founded in 1962, just completed its 50th year of competition.

“If it ultimately fails, won’t be because we tried,” Hurd said.
