Anyone else reading up on this discovery. This is a pretty big deal
ETA: Bums!!!
The scientists wait a very long time before they cautiously announce that, yes, we think we've found the Higgs particle, and then I read this in an article on Yahoo! (from LiveScience.com)??
"When generated in a particle collider like the LHC, [a Higgs] boson would be expected to decay into a unique set of lighter particles. It appears that the newfound particle at the LHC decayed in a way that the run-of-the-mill Standard Model Higgs would not have."
Of course, the article goes on to explain that it may be the case that this is one of five different Higgs-like bosons and that it might support a higher-level model of physics, and that we know the Standard model is not right (like Newton's laws aren't exactly right either, just close.)
