Lights are on in Hampton Roads. I hear a lot of places west of here are without power. My parents have power, my tenants in Salem and former coworkers in the valley do not. Also a lot of friends in Richmond are without power.

I'm on the way with the family to pick up a generator in NC. It's going to be almost a week for us, plus our power goes out a lot anyway.

Should've bought one during hurricane preparedness week and the sales tax holiday on emergency supplies.

It was my parents idea but I know you're right. I'm just helping them out because I have no power, and my workplace doesn't either.

edit: at the Lowe's in Greensboro, we met 3 others from Lynchburg who were driving down as well. Lowe's said they have tons of people like us driving to NC for generators.

Bear in mind that yesterday, all the local gas stations were sold out of gasoline, and ice was sold out everywhere as well.

Oh wow. I remember this. I had some friends from LU who lived in Galveston, TX who stayed with us in Austin for about 6 weeks.

Its like, "oh, I had it worse so therefore you'll be fine"...it doesn't make it easier for the people going through it.

Sorry, just one of my pet peeves...Its like when people are like, "oh you wait, it gets worse" in regards to parenthood...how are statements like that at all helpful?

Another derecho is trying to form in Ohio, soon to cross into WV. Doesn't look as strong, but look out around 10 PM-midnight in the Lynchburg area.

Guys, I've been through tornadoes that have done less damage. I was out with my wife at Isabella
s Friday night so we decided to head over to Starbucks to get some coffee. As we were walking out, I was reading twitter and some one said to take cover immediately from the storm. I thought to myself "what storm?". Right after I finished that though, a gust wind over 50 mph blew from sky to ground causing me to get close to the ground. We ran to the car and watched all hell break loose. There were powers lines and trees flying went down everywhere. I am so thankful that no one was hurt during this. Seeing the aftermath is really sobering that we are blessed to have a place to stay and somewhere to go to keep cool.

Definitely saw my fair share of trees laying on top of powerlines, but the strangest was seeing a car smashed under a roof on Campbell Ave.

The wind storm itself was pretty spectacular. I went out to close the windows in my car and could barely see through all the dust. The trees in my woods were practically touching the ground, but surprisingly none of them snapped.

APCO spokesperson said on the local news this morning that this is the most customers they have ever had without power, EVER. Around 75% of all customers in Lynchburg and all 4 surrounding counties were without power. Pretty incredible. And I am still counting my blessings that we lost our power for a total of about 5 minutes. I really feel for all those without it. Been there, done that, but not in this kind of heat.

The Texans have arrived. I saw a convoy of North Houston Pole Line utility trucks roll into town. Although from what Sly has told us about Ike, I'm not sure they'll be much help.

I was driving up the west end of Timberlake when that hit, and ended up getting caught in a big hailstorm along with the hurricane wind and rain. I don't feel like I'm living in Virginia anymore, this is getting kind of stupid.
