The tournament is being held at the famous Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. Golf Digest ranked it 22nd in America and 3rd in the state of California behind the two courses at Pebble Beach.

Lang's article in the local paper:
Thomas has LU golf team in NCAA tournament field for first time
By: Chris Lang | The News & Advance
Published: May 29, 2012

For eight years, Liberty’s golf program has grown steadily under the watch of alum Jeff Thomas. It had gotten to the point that, as Thomas put it, the Flames had a "good program." But the task of moving the program from good to elite hasn’t been an easy one.

The Flames have been a top 35 program for the past several seasons, sitting right around No. 31 in the Golfweek college rankings for the balance of the 2011-12 school year. To move to that elite level, though, Liberty was going to have to make nationals, something that has eluded the Flames throughout their history.

Two weekends ago at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C., Liberty didn’t just make nationals. It served notice that it is a true contender for the team title, bulling its way through a field that included two top-10 teams (Auburn and UNLV) and several power-conference contenders (Florida and Duke among them) to clinch its first regional title and earn a berth into the NCAA championships, which begin today at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.

We are on the top half of the leaderboard despite playing along side an atrocious team from just up 29. Hopefully the guys can work hard enough to make it into match play.

Sly, you've been gone so long that you've forgotten your Virginia geography: the "atrocious team" is west on 460.

I looked at the leaderboard at one point last night:

Alabama
Florida
UCLA
Stanford
Oklahoma
Auburn
Liberty
Florida State
Texas

It was nice to see our name mixed in among all those BCS powers

Nice to see what an ALUM has done with the Golf team... a former player, and he is winning!

Not a big name but he is winning! Hmmmm. Props to Coach Thomas, hope they make the top 8!

Yea, we hung around +4 to +7 for a long time and were in the top 8. They all seemed to struggle on the back nine which was actually the front nine. We went from like +7 to +11 in like 2 or 3 holes. They can get it back though.

Your honesty is duly noted manson. I had my boss calling and texting me every half hour when word came in that we had one of our boats win (and Im sure if LU wins the golf championship this week theyll be blowing it up again), so apparently to the people who are my direct superiors (and who's opinion matters a bit more to me now in my current position), it warranted mention. If nothing else, any national championship (whether club sports or NCAA sports) is going to be used to better market the school

Definitely. If it's not at the highest level, it's not nearly as big a deal. To me, it about the same thing as when our intramural flag football team played for a national championship in the early 2000's.
