The "problem" is whatever is lacking that results in our not having made it into post-season play with any consistancy in baseball or MBB, and never having made it in football in spite of the fact that we have the best record in the BSC over the past several years.

BSK started this thread presenting the premise that the problem is a lack of "swagger". I'm pretty sure he knew he was pushing a bit of a hot button with that. You can play around with semantics all you want, but the fact is the word has some negative connotations, especially from a christian perspective. It implies an air of cockiniss and entitlement and a lack of humility. I don't think any of those things necessarily help you win, and they can in fact hurt you.

I countered with the suggestion that our most successful programs have achieved that success not with swagger, but with superior talent. He then did what appears to be a 180, agreed with me, but implied that we need new coaches to get better recruits.

We have a new football coach, so that doesn't even apply for at least a few years. In baseball, recruiting is Toman's forte. The problem there is sometimes questionable in-game management and the fact that we have to deal with maybe the best program in any sport in our conference in Gilmore's Coastal squad. IMHO, the jury is out on Dale Layer. He has gone "all in" with a JUCO-dominated recruiting class, and he needs to get results soon. The solution in all cases lies in talent, not attitude.

I've heard there were 3 or 4 staffers leaving at the end of the year and 1 already left before tourny started. Anyone verify this? Odd timing to say the least.

It is. I guess I should have figured that out, but the discussion was about football and basketball as well.

Man, that's a huge turnover for baseball. You would think coaches would want to stick around with a new stadium on the way.

Chach left to play independent ball.
Billy left for another job.
Hagen is probably out after the season.

First of all Oldflame -- I never implied 'coaches'

Look at the History of LU Big 3 sports:

No playoffs in football EVER!

Nothing in Baseball EVER!

Only twice in Men's Hoops! Out of 20 years of trying.

It's the culture of the school... People don't hand you titles. You earn them..

I will say this, it's easier for LU to dominate in Women's hoops, volleyball, track and field, or golf in the Big South.

Maybe you'd be happier if you would just root for Coastal Carolina and not be so frustrated with LU's "big 3". I'm looking out for your happiness. Life's too short. :?

TorC--

I'm not sure when you are talking but this is a fact...in Nov 2006 LU lost to Barton College. Not exactly on the cusp of anything IMO.

He thinks all was good and on the right track pre-JB. No kind of logical thinking will change his mind. Now have we improved in any other sports other than football since JB has come on? No...but its comical to me that he truly thinks we were better off before JB got here.

Not that I agree or disagree, but I would love to hear your reasoning behind this. Is the Big South a male dominated conference? If so, how and why? Are women's sports not supported as well at other Big South schools? If so, how is that possible with Title IX issues? Are we talking history and tradition here or are we talking facilities, resources, etc?

No. Women's programs are not as well funded at other schools in relation to LU. No this is not a Title IX issue in most cases.

I wonder how that could be the case and it not be a Title IX issue.

Examples:
T & F -- from what I know LU has more scholarships for this sport than other schools, therefore deeper teams more runners etc. Also they have been good for a long time.

Women's Hoops -- signed 2 twins and got a Russian import that started the Roll! Also if you are a parent of a girl, where do u feel safer having your daughter, LU, Winthrop, or Coastal? It's not even close.

Golf has Karllson and now has a pretty nice facility on it's way, it will continue the rise.

I think we will all agree that LU teams are consistent in some regards, but my point is the Big 3 just can't get over the hump! No excuse for football not getting it done. Being Co-Champs is a joke in the 5 team conference.

You're right. I feel like in one of our 100 recent presser's JB even mentioned the fact that we have a fully funded womens program and how that's not necessarily the "norm" in the industry today

All 20 teams at Liberty are fully funded scholarship wise. The question then is this, what are the scholarship levels of other sports at other schools in our conference, both male and female? I would doubt anyone else is fully funded on both sides, and you can't fully fund all of your men's programs and not your women's for Title IX reasons from what I understand. Somewhere the other schools have to be giving out women's scholarships.
