Three Named to 2006 Big South Women's Soccer All-Conference First Team
November 1, 2006
Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty Lady Flames Suzanne Edwards, Amy Oberlin and Mandee Wheelock were named to the 2006 Big South All-Conference first team as the league announced Wednesday evening. The announcements were made at the conference’s annual women’s soccer awards banquet, held at Crown Reef Hotel in Conway, S.C.
In addition to the three members on the first team, Liberty forward Ashley Braam was selected to the all-conference second team and midfielder/defender Heather Bowling and midfielder Maggie Woody were named to the conference’s inaugural all-freshman team. Wheelock also was honored as Women’s Soccer co-Scholar Athlete of the Year and named to the all-academic team.
Defender Edwards (Waxhaw, N.C.) was named all-conference for the first time in her career. This season, the junior has played in all 15 games with nine starts. Earning a starting job in the sixth game of the season, her steady play helped to settle the Lady Flames defense as Liberty has four shutouts and 0.86 goals-against-average over the span.
Sophomore midfielder Oberlin (Ada, Mich.) also was selected to her first all-conference first team and her second all-conference team after being named to the 2005 Big South’s All-Conference second team. The Lady Flames’ leading scorer this season, Oberlin has scored a team-high five goals and added two assists for 12 points.
A senior midfielder, Wheelock (Front Royal, Va.) received her third selection to the Big South All-Conference first team. The Lady Flames’ captain also was named to all-conference first team in 2003 and 2005. This season, the midfielder has scored four goals and assisted on three others. Three of her goals have been game-winners. In addition, she was named Women’s Soccer co-Scholar Athlete of the Year and to the academic team.
Braam (Jr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) was named to all-conference second team. It is the first time the junior has been selected to an all-conference team. The forward was off to her best season at Liberty with four goals and two assists, before being injured in the 11th game of the season.
Bowling (Waxhaw, N.C.) and Woody (Asheville, N.C.) were named to the conference’s first-ever all-freshman team. Bowling has started all 11 games she has played this season with one assist. Woody has played in 13 games with eight starts, scoring two goals and assisting on another.
Winthrop goalkeeper Dimtra Poulos and head coach Melissa Heinz were awarded the 2006 Big South Women’s Soccer Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively.
Winthrop midfielder Audrey Falconi was voted Freshman of the Year. High Point’s Traci Andersen shared the Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor with Wheelock.
The awards banquet serves as the kickoff for the 2006 Women’s Soccer Championship. The first round begins tomorrow in Conway, S.C., with four games scheduled throughout the day at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field. The semifinals will be played Friday beginning at 4 p.m., with the title match slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.
Liberty, the tournament’s defending champion and #3 seed, takes on #6 seed High Point in the third contest of the day tomorrow at 5 p.m.
