I remember a convo when either Doc or Towns told us not to go out to eat at a sit down place if we don't have enough money to tip. I'm pretty sure it was Doc. I think time may have changed some of your facts NaJ.

1, I think non LU people in the community like Jerry Jr. better than his father.

2, The community is changing, The old heads of lynchburg are fading and the community is becoming Liberty Alumni / Staff . I would say the ratio of those connected with the school that live in Lynchburg has doubled in the last 5 years and will continue to grow.
On #1, I'll go ahead and say that as an LU person, I like Jerry Jr. far better than his dad. I was no fan of Sr. and found that he often did as much harm as good. I remember distinctly when I hosted at The Crown (I believe the name was Crown Sterling in those days--'97ish) that the wait staff begged to not have Sr. seated in their section. The reason was that he refused to tip, at all. I asked him about it one night while seating him and he gave me the "it's their job, they don't need a tip" spiel. It seemed completely foreign to him that wait staff worked for less than minimum wage plus tips and he didn't seem to care even after that was explained to him by an LU student. I don't see anything like that from Jr. at all.

#2 is interesting as well. I'm shocked by how many of my former classmates have moved back down there after initially leaving upon graduation. It will be interesting to see the dynamic of Lynchburg at the next census for sure. I think LU has a chance to be the major influence in Lynchburg for the foreseeable future.
Nice that you compliment Jerry Jr., but maybe you should consider the audience that reads here. Your comment #1 almost seems to be personal and doesn't really seem to be in any way constructive. Anyway, that guy, Culpepper (sic) seemed to really like the Falwells, and I'd guess he was much more of a fixture at the Crown than you were.

Comment #2- I agree, and I think that we are already seeing LU's influence spread in some really positive ways (i.e. the new C of C facility).

Couldn't care less if you believe it or not. It was a pretty well known thing for those of us that worked in restaurants in the city at that time. Granted, that was 97-98 so it may have changed later on, but I was shocked by how quickly the ENTIRE wait staff flooded to the front to beg me not to seat him in their section because of his habit of not tipping.
ahhh now it "might have changed"

I know for a fact he was known around town as a great tipper. Stop trying to start crap

Several of us have liberty stuff on so Doc comes over and talks to us and finds out it's our friends birthday. He wishes her a happy birthday and goes on. We go to pay the bill and he paid our entire bill, probably $150.
Over the years, I have heard MANY Liberty students tell similar stories about Doc.

How many PAID tickets do we average a game? Students do not count. I remember in the 90's when they would stand on Wards Rd and hand them out.

Ya Doc is known for his generosity. It was a running joke that he would come home shoeless because he gave them away. I mean even Al Sharpton extolled how much he loved people and did for those less fortunate. I'm not saying NAJ is lying he just knows a lot that isn't true.

NOT a joke. Read Mrs. Macel Falwell's book on Doc. She tells the shoe story in the biography.

She also tells the story of Doc offering a server--the day before he died--a full scholarship at LU. After his death, Mrs. Falwell went back to the restaurant and told the server that Doc's offer of a full scholarship was still good.

I think he meant that it was a regular source of humor Cider...Ive often heard stories of Doc giving up the clothes on his back to help people and going out of his way for students. I think I remember him treating some students to dinner at The Crown once

Doc was a lot of things but stingy wasn't one of them. Also, he had a real good jab to the body! Maybe the service at Crown Sterling was that bad lol.

And Doc had an amazing bear hug that would make some football players almost cry.

Dr. Falwell was the greatest person America has seen in the past 50 years, maybe longer. No one man did more for Lynchburg, and even the nation than Dr Falwell. Those who did not like him, simply did not know him.

This.

He & Macel got a table next to us at Red Lobster one time. MORE than one server kept coming by to check on them, even our server. I knew the hostess & asked her why that was happening. She said it was because he tipped so much that many servers wanted a piece of the action.

And yes, he said it in convo & he said it in TRBC - if you can't afford to tip the servers, don't bother going out to eat, stop giving Christians a bad name.

So true! I was blessed to have the privelege to be with Doc on several occasions across the country traveling with one of Liberty's singing groups. I was able to have one on one conversations as well as observe his interactions with others from our group. He was the real deal!!

Georgia State well-positioned to move to FBS according to article on ajc.com. Lists the Sun Belt as best fit. I would be very surprised if they do not get an invite to the Sun Belt.

I read about GSU this afternoon. Now I'm interested in seeing what Liberty's feasibility report will say in March/April! :D

Funny you say that. I'm in ATL at a CASE conference and heard someone from GA State talking about how they'll be in the Sunbelt here soon and Liberty will be joining them. Pretty shocked this was an unprovoked conversation that I just happened to hear.
