Pregame and Halftime are good.

I agree with soopa. During the game could be a little different. I have no suggestions at this point.

And this is where the argument falls short for me. So basically let's do what we want to do and forget everyone else. Why NOT strive for something that will keep people, if not in their seats, interested in what's going on down on the field. I'm not saying pop musice but something that will entertain a rowdy crowd. As it stands, I keep waiting for them to play the MontyPython clip "And now, for something completely different."
A better way, iMO, to recruit band members is to host a huge band contest. These things are huge and draw a bucketload of people. Why the powers that be don't set aside time for this baffles me. It is a huge subculture. It has everything LU claims it wants: money maker, PR, scores of potential new students and can showcase the LU band! They can have all the pageantry and flags they want...and be more appreciated for their time and effort

Yeah, maybe we should hope the powers that be will get rid of a band director that instills pride and precission and hires one who is mediocre.

And by the way...I'm not in the band!
Again I don't care about the band. They sound fine during the game and are boring at halftime while I normally got food/used the bathroom. So my opinion about this really shouldn't matter to anybody

whats funny is that next year (according to what Ive heard), LU will be hosting its own band competition after the USSBA scheduled LU's USSBA event for the same weekend as the JMU Parade of Champions and the local bands who had competed in the USSBA event before ended up in Harrisonburg and Dr Kerr was not very thrilled with that...

Thats about right...course Dr Kerr wasnt the one who set the date...but your point is well made, which is why there wont be (that I can tell) a USSBA event in 2012

Does the band still go to the Lynchburg Classic...that always seems to be a hit. As far as competitions here I am amazed we don't have more at williams. It's a great facility. With the upper deck you can really see the drill. Around 1999 they had a DCI show at williams. The Cadets and Bluecoats were here. Where is the DCI show in roanoke ever year?...it used to be at the stadium they tore down...surely Williams would be better than any of the stadiums left in roanoke.

BJ, how about hosting a TOB (tournament of bands) competition...Have we tried to reach out to that group? They might be more northern, but according to Wikipedia there are 27 tob bands in Virginia and 4 in North Carolina...most of those wouldn't go to the Harrisonburg competition, so that would be a totally different group of highschool bands. Maybe they could host one of those so there wouldnt be a conflict with Harrisonburg even if the competitions were on the same date.

It depends on the football schedule. I think I recall one occasion where the band played at halftime and then had to leave the stadium and bus straight over to City Stadium to play exhibition for the Classic (that story may have been the band left for City stadium as soon as the game was over, Id have to check). As for Tournament of Bands, I had heard from a friend of mine in this year's band about hosting our own competition so I dont know what the details are on that as of yet. Events like the Lynchburg Classic and our own competitions are major tools for recruiting from the area bands (Glass, JF, Heritage, Brookville, LCA etc.) so Im sure that is being considered as it is being planned out.

The DCI event is actually at Salem Stadium now and it draws very well every summer. I went a couple years ago with a few area band friends.

NotAJerry wrote:How about 2 smaller routines? Do parts of each during the various halftimes and then play both in full at the end of the year. Try to have a striking difference between them and it may show the band in a better light while spicing things up. Hopefully that would fit in the same kind of schedule.
We did two shows a LONG time ago (THINK it was my sophomore year, so it would have been fall of '87). One show was really good -- it was the first one we learned. The second show looked like we threw something together to make a second show -- it was way below par, and nobody (including the band) liked it. I think we performed it once, and then it was never spoken of again.

Most schools that do multiple shows each year have a band made up 100% of music majors. Liberty doesn't. The best they could do is learn a modular show, where you learn 8 different "segments" and then piece them together differently each week. Of course, people would get tired of that, too. There's not a real viable solution that is going to make everyone happy.

Can I ask why they have decided to play to the student side? I used to actually enjoy some of the halftime shows, but now it is pretty much useless to me from the Baptist side. No, I'm not going to run to the other side for halftime.

The band doesnt play exclusively to the student side but its mostly so they can hear and enjoy the show just as much as the Baptist side. Homecoming is always played to the Baptist side and the home opener is played to the Baptist side...

We were talking about the Pagentry of the band and it's efficacy in motivation and entertainment of a college football crowd in Lynchburg VA

The best halftime show by far at LU is the show on Military Appreciation Day each season. That is better than the other 5 or 6 combined

What I don't understand is why DCI has a competition in Roanoke ever year. Remember, they can really only seat people in HALF of the stadium. How many people can you pack into half of Salem field? 4000 or so? Wouldn't DCI be better off at LU...they could sell at least twice as many tickets, and have a good area for the vendors in the concourse area of Williams Stadium.

They don't even get to 4,000 though. Maybe 3,000.

This is Mrs. flafan, so take that into consideration. Came across this today. Not sure of all the words (I'm old), but thought it was catchy with a beat, I'd give it a 9. I'm really old (back to Band Stand Days). Don't know if it's appropriate or not for anything.

I am a symbol by house of heroes. its on their new record which came out yesterday. not only does the song use a flame motif, but they are playing here for the block party in august!

the song starts off kind of mellow, but Ive NEVER heard a song describe liberty so well before. seriously. if not for football then we definitely need to use this for something.

sample lyrics:
i will sing for hope
i will sing for life
and when i'm gone the flame keeps burnin' on!

I couldn't find the thread about the intro but this answered 1 question we had:
@LibertyRadioPxP: Ever want 2 run onto Williams Stadium through the @LibertyFootball tunnel with 2001 blaring? U can now! http://bit.ly/Mhtbem #FillTheBill
Sounds like 2001 is here to stay. Crybaby
