Yeah so put THAT in your pipe and smoke it!

Ha. Actually we will have a big hole to fill at PG next year, and I'm not sure the 'other' Saunders is the answer to our scoring woes.
Yeah biggest concern next year is the PG position..If we cant get the ball up the court then it doesn't matter if we have the best shooter in the country. Plus the Pg is the QB of the offense.. Def going to miss Sanders assists next year.

I agree that Saunders isnt the answer to our scoring woes. Maybe that why DL is bringing in a guy such a Davon that can shoot it up which will take pressure off of JC. It's all hypothetiical though.

They gave Case Keenum, QB at Houston a 6th season for injury, so its possibly if he would try.

He even played one game in his 5th season.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6022570
The NCAA grants a sixth year of eligibility only if a player has missed two seasons because of an injury or circumstances beyond the player's control. Keenum was granted a medical redshirt in 2006 because of a separated shoulder sustained late in his senior season in high school.
This paragraph from your link most likely rules JB's chances out. I believe his redshirt year was not medically related.

I'm sure they did, but even LU's compliance people told him the chance of him getting the redshirt are slim to none. John stayed in town last weekend to take his LSATs. He's got a bright future regardless of what happens with his basketball career.

Duquesne University starts 5'11", 6'1", 6'2", 6'5" and 6'7" with the first guy off the bench being 5'10". They play A-10 and are pretty successful with "what they have" and have a winning record 14-9 (5-5 in A10) with wins at Richmond, Dayton and UMass to name a few. Last year lead the NCAA in Assists/TO ratio and steals and in the top 10 in scoring. So it can be done with the right talent.

I wish the best for him whether he tries or not. He is a good guy! Always more to life than BBall.

Completely agree with the comments regarding the need to be careful of routinely filling roster spots with JUCOs, but the real issue will be what happens next year. If you go find the right high school guards to come in to learn from these guys for a year and be ready to step in as sophomores, then you get yourself back on track.

This seems like a great pickup. What you potentially have next year is our current big guys plus Coronado and Sommy (Burris plays alot of 4); Gielo, Smith, and some Speaks at the 3; and a few excellent shooters and possibly creators at the guard spots. This gives Layer alot of options - no need to worry about the size of the guards if we are going 6-7, 6-7,6-8 across the front line. Especially in the Big South as opposed to a bigger conference where the off guards may create much greater matchup problems.

Davon Marshall chooses Liberty

By Jonah Bronstein
Niagara Gazette

When he graduated from Niagara Falls High School two years ago, Davon Marshall thought he was good enough to be a Division I basketball player, even if college recruiters weren’t willing to confirm his belief.

Marshall’s ambition paid off over the weekend when he accepted a scholarship offer to play for Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. next year.

“Davon always believed that he could play at that level,” his father, Cornell Marshall, said Monday night. “It didn’t work out initially out of high school but he didn’t let that deter him. He kept working hard.”

Layer is in no position to start from scratch. A freshman needing to develop has no use for a coach under fire.

I don't like it from a program perspective either, but it makes a ton of sense if Layer looks at next year as a do or die situation.

Exactly, I am sure he is well aware that if next season is a bad one he will be gone. Its the nature of the beast

From a program perspective, it isn't all negative and isn't necessarily just about a coach feeling pressure. The most important thing we can do for recruiting is build momentum as a program; our front court looks promising for 2013, let's make sure we have the other pieces in place to be competitive.

That may be the case but remember, its Jeff Barber who makes that call (not us message board guys). We may feel that if next season doesnt go well, that he is gone but thats why he is the one who makes that decision and not us. We can push him to make that decision of course but at the end of the day he is the one "signing the check".

He is the one who makes the decision because we think we know what he's gonna do? What?

Beej don't confuse what has been said before. JB will not let mediocrity become the status quo. That's an observation made time and time again throughout his career as AD. Projecting an AD's decision based on their history is much different than deciding any of us are fit to do his job.

Wow, we're known for chasing rabbits around here. But this is quite a trail that has been taken.

Back to the original topic, Davon will play the 2 along with John Caleb next year so he is able to find places to spot up & shoot. Emanuel Andrews & Larry Taylor are pure point guards. Tavares will likely slide into the wing spot along with Chad Donley. That will provide plenty of experience on the perimeter to go along with all of our existing strength in the paint. I have to admit that next season is looking much more promising than it did a couple of months ago when we were all fretting what would happen after Jesse was gone.

I love all the moves that are taking place right now.. we will have 6 bigs 2 pgs..and the rest are just scorers and shooters. This will prevent us from having to play John Caleb for 30 minutes when really is a Jeremy Anderson type of player 10-15 minutes and knock down a couple threes. Get a wing freshman and we will be good to go. The only move is up here.

Cabe's role next year will depend to some extent on how the newcomers perform, but I think you are underestimating him in saying he is only a 10-15 minute/gm spot-up shooter. He was a big-time versetile scorer against tough competition in Houston HS ball, and has shown a lot of progress in adjusting to D1 play this year. Personally, I expect him to play about the same minutes next year and up his scoring to 13-15 ppg.

Your sarcasm is duly noted...I do know that..course there are some who feel like the more they crow about it that somehow itll cause something to happen. The sound minded and well reasoned folks around here like yourself know good and well that what we say on here isnt going to affect personnel decisions

If we want to compete at a higher level than we are going to need an upgrade from Cabe even to compete higher in the Big South. He just isnt that good and does not play defense at all.
