Yeah, it's obvious he "flat out coached" finishing with three straight first round losses in what on this thread has been described as a low major. Not to be redundant, but everybody else is: losing to VMI was completely embarassing with the clear talent advantage Liberty had. At least on that night a simple zone defense befuddled him and the team. It is obvious that if it was any other coach than RD you would want the coach and JB fired. You never want any consequences for the truth of his final years. People can disagree but it was a reasonable decission.

Not to enflame, but that VMI team was not a bad team, including Reggie, but also some very good others. Remember they went to the finals, and came within about 5 minutes of taking out a good
Winthrop team. They led a good part of the way, as I recall.

grm, I remember it much the same way. I did, however, go to all three VMI games that year and we were clearly superior athletically and skill wise. We never made a noticeable change in our offense in the tournament game.

As for the current state of the program, when I went to the Campbell game this year I was surprised and disappointed at how the athletism for this program has declined. Though I agreed with getting rid of RD at the time, I will acknowlede it may not have moved us forward and looks to have moved us back. I just get tired of a few people that have an agenda against JB because of one decission that is defendable. I haven't agreed with everything JB has done, but I believe it is flat out wrong to say the atheletic program is not in better shape that when he took over. Back to basketball, I don't know if firing Layer is right or wrong right now but certainly Liberty should have a better men's hoop team than we do now.

Thanks.

I believe Layer is a decent coach, or a good coach, and a good man. I would not consider firing him. There has been so much turbulence, and without the horses, you don't win.

Back to 2006-07, Reggie was Reggie, & Travis Holmes was defensive player of the year for the BS, plus they both made the all-tournament team. I think WU beat them by 3 in the finals, & then WU went on to defeat Notre Dame by 10 in the NCAA's. Plus, we had a chance to win at the end vs VMI (1 point loss) but Blair got raped coming up out of the key toward midcourt (he was supposed to be a diversion anyway) and Smith inbounded it to him in the backcourt with 3.8 seconds left & brewington open on the sideline, and that sealed it.

It's history now, but, .... oh well............. Go Flames & Go Dragons

That's the big problem we're facing.

P.S.

Of course I know that this comment was not directed toward me, but just for the record, I have never called for the firing of any coach in any program at LU.

I did say that RMK was not the man for the job, but only after he had left the program.

This sort of well reasoned and respectful posting will not be tolerated on this board. :)

I actually stopped by Coach D's practice tonight with the VUL girls.

He's going to do some great work with that program.

No it is because TTL went to his practice. I use to be a regular at RD's LU practices. Go check him out and you will see/hear a different level.

Say What you want, but there are a few things that are obvious:

They will ALL defend better than JC

They Will contest shots.

They Will feed the post.

They won't have to play zone because they can't defend the dribble.

Go watch it and compare it to Liberty Mens Division I basketball team. Tell me which is better.

They wouldn't lose to William and Mary.

They Wont make excuses and complain.

The fact of the matter is, Randy is going to be talked about because he was the last good coach we had, He was the best recruiter we have had, and we haven't even been in competition to play in the Big South Championship, let alone win one. I guess you guys would have preferred that he used Liberty for a couple years to take a coaching job at a bigger school and it wouldn't be a joke to you then.

Id much rather say that I am a part of that program (and Im not) than one that doesn't care. None of you can convince me other-wise because you were the same ones saying that Randy had brought us great talent and asking when we would start getting more talent again.

Come on TBGB, you know I respect what RD did here. I’m just tired of hearing about it. As we all are. The more “his defenders” keep “defending” him, the more his legacy will be tarnished. He’s not our coach. He’s not going to be. I’m not wasting my time with a D3 women’s team. Are they even D3?

Again, I’m not an RD supporter. I’m a LU supporter.

No. The More his haters downplay what was accomplished, the more it will be tarnished. There would be no reason to defend if there were no attacks. I am an RD supporter, and also a Liberty supporter. I don't support what is going on right now though.

Thats fine, no one asked you to waste your time with a D3 womens team (they aren't, but we can call it that), but I will the same way I waste my time watching teams that do the right things. We just value different things in this situation. Thats all.

You don't have to "waste" any time, but you're wasting time laughing at the coach that was the last one to be competitive for the team you support. Thats whats a waste of time. Since I support Liberty, I am wasting my time by watching bad defense, bad offense, bad guard play, and only a few talented players. Thats whats a waste of time.

Rather than waste time, lets waste money and resources playing in the CIT tournament to make everyone feel better about not getting the job done. Thats a waste. Thats a joke. But its the best accomplishment since Randy left. $50,000 banner looks real good.

So who's really wasting time?

WE JUST CAME IN 2ND LAST YEAR. If you can't hang your hat on regular season finishes, then I don't think you have any argument at all.

You can ride with me to practice.

I know that you aren't much for wasting time because you haven't traveled far to see this team play.

and I think I actually won an argument on FlameFans by you saying "He started it"

AND LOST A HOME GAME TO THE 7TH PLACE TEAM BECAUSE WE WERE OUT-COACHED... NO ACCOMPLISHMENT THERE. EVERY COACH IN THE CONFERENCE SAYS IT WAS BECAUSE WE PLAYED HARD. TEAMS STARTED MATCHING OUR INTENSITY AND WE STARTED LOSING AND NEVER LOOKED BACK. (and if you think thats just an observation, ask the other Big South Coaches. They will tell you thats what happened)

And since when do we care about regular season finishes? 2nd, 1st, 2nd would be great to have then. No one talks about that so I figured it wasn't logical to bring up around here.
