I actually think the number is pretty accurate. I imagine that some people that came late didn't get counted. But I signed up as an alumni, but I actually bought a ticket. Now they made me go through the ticket gate so I was counted there...don't know if I was counted twice.

I think LU puts a decent effort into the number...it is fairly accurate. SOme people were saying less because they saw gaps on the baptist side near the 50. But those gaps were b/c they were enforcing the reserved general admission seats and holding them (they cost an extra $5).

There were not only portable stands in the endzone, but also above the regular stands, which was hard to tell from the other side.

Even if they counted about 800 twice between people as alumni and comming back through...then take about 200 people not counted...that still gets you 15,000.

I imagine that the turnstile is used by most schools. Now if you wanted to get really high teck, you coud get some kind of infrared beam like they have on garage door openers, and somehow sence what # of people go out and what # go in...but is it really worth the cost to get a slightly more accurate #?

I think turnstiles are fine...

Back in the USFL days they used to eyeball the stadium for % of capacity and cross reference that against the number of tickets sold for the game and guesstimate a number. Obviously that isn't the best case scenario. I like the bar code on tickets as well as scanning student ID's. That is going to get the most accurate count in terms of actual attendance. Total ticket sales is a measure I am fine with if they can get a good handle on tracking student tickets.

The solution is easy it just takes money.
Reinforce the area around the stadium via landscaping, architecture or what ever. then have very SOLID gates like in "other" stadiums. Usually you have to search and search for your seat, after arriving at your gate. Then have a scanning device for the bar code on tickets which EVERYONE must have. Students can pick them up during the week at the "Student Center" (Assuming we have one) by showing their ID. That way you can see who shows up. "Professionalize" the "ticket takers". THe students do an outstanding job, but if you have another entity in charge of these things, they will be a little more dispassionate about the "I've NEVER paid before and I ALWAYS sit at the 50 yd line"
Funny, it seems like I have seen this type of proposal before.........

(Going back to Coastal days alert)

We had to show our student ID and pick up an actually ticket during the week. It was possible to run out of student section seats and we'd have to send others to the hill. We could also buy one ticket for ten bucks for someone not at Coastal.

Haize, they have enforced the 50 yard line thing with reserved seats this year. The students are doing a good job this year. I know because I have reserved tickets in the silver seats near the 50 this year, and have had them in the past as well. In the last 2 years, other people have been sitting in my seats.

But that has not happened this year. Homecomming is a great example. Look at the picture and see the empty silver seats at the 50. They weren't all filled because they checked tickets and made people move if they didn't pay to sit there.

I was actually worried that they wouldn't do a good job with the seating stuff, but THEY HAVE THIS YEAR. I give them credit. And I think the numbers are fairly accurate.

There's another way to get an accurate count, that would be easier. It just takes technological savy. Put two of the infrared beams at each entrance. Somehow have a computer program...if the beam towards the outside is broken first, that's a person comming in...if the one on the inside, that's a person going out.

Have the computer keep track with how many people went in and went out...have them networked together, and at the end of the game you have your accurate number...and people don't have to worry about scanning tickets.

How would you know if the person coming in was a new person or the same person that just left?

You wouldn't...but why would that matter? Because the computer would count how many people left, and also how many people came in. If you left, the number goes down one, but if you come back in, it goes back up one.

If a new person comes, the number goes up one.

You see, a person comming in would break the beam on the outside first, then on the inside. A person leaving breaks the beam on the inside then the outside.

That's the beauty of it.

Ok what if 5000 people leave at half time? When do you turn the beams off? What if they leave and don't come back? What if Luconn and his friends go back and forth through the beam 100 times each just to play with you? I'm just messing with you Jim :P You would have to make sure that the workers don't cross the beam and that the grounds crew or media people that don't pay, don't pass by the beam coming or going.

Yeah, it has it's weaknesses. I guess what you would get it to record, is the highest # of people in the stadium during the length of the game. The computer could keep track and give you the highest # of people in the stadium through the first 3 quarters, which you could then announce in the 4th quarter...when you would turn the beams off.

But that's not the same as paid attendance. It would be more of a turnstile without the bar.

Of course, we could start a new tradition, after the opening kickoff. A worker could sit in the far left seat of every game. He woud then yell zero. Everyone else would start counting off.

This would be distracting to the opposing team, who has never heard it before. It woud probably take until the 1st quarter was halfway through to complete.

Our team would get used to hearing it, thus giving us an accurate #, and a way to rattle the opposing team, haha.

A lot of schools have no pass-outs meaning, if you leave, you must pay to get back in. scanning tickets is the best way to get an accurate count, and the students can either pickup their tickets before the game, or scan an ID or something like that.

Yes but you did not add the upgraded capital improvements. The NO RETURN policy is a great idea. Part of the reason is that you never know WHEN they take the count.
And quite frankly, why are the numbers that important anyways? At least until we have to gin them up for the infamous D1A move
