If Turner Gill has a philosophy in recruiting, football, strategy, I'd love to hear it. All he would ever say was something about getting to know players on a deeper level. We found out getting to know them on a deeper level does not include academics.

He is going to come off well initially, because he is going to seem like a great christian guy who is all about the kids. But listen real close, he never really says anything coherent at all. There is no real substance in ANYTHING he says.

Rumor is that several KU players may not come back. Maybe he will take some with him.

Good luck, and just know that you have been warned.

Since this was handled about as brilliantly as it possibly could have been there is plenty of time to salvage this year's class. I honestly think we'll retain all we want and out recruit some others...he has a black book of his own remember.

Seriously, Chancellor, Askew, Barber and Carr need to be commended...we diverted what could have been a year or even more setback. We just acted like a major institution with this decision and proved while being 60k+ we're still agile.

This also helps us with the conference situation which is still shifting....we just became relevant again, even more so now. We have arrived.

PS I hope JoeBob isnt still on kansas payroll as well...they might cut his compensation if they read this! :D

and for clarity, KU was in MUCH BETTER shape when he arrived than when he left (national laughing stock). He basically drove a multimillion dollar corporation in the ground, Enron style or mortgage forclosure style.

Oh yeah, they were the poster child for stability and how programs should be run before he got there.

I'm sure he left with tons of allegations like the Big Manbeano had...if the nation was laughing when he left, it's because they never stopped

you're a joke, go away

No mention of it over on CoastalFans, Keydet Sportstalk or any of the other regularly used football boards that I can see. Im sure word will leak down though...is that JoeBob guy still going on about him though? They ran a guy out of town who had 4 straight winning seasons and then had a minor step back his last year.

Dude, KU has almost always been a basketball school. They couldn't give a rat's behind about the success of their football team. If you're just going to be negative, go to your Jayhawk board. We're enjoying quite possibly the biggest hire in our school's athletics history.

Kansas is an afterthought when it comes to Big 12 football. Gill deserved more than 2 years there to get the program back on track after Mangino's fiasco. Talk about a delusional fan base.

I have a feeling that this is going to have a real steadying influence on the recruiting class for 2012. Maybe we will see some names that Rocco may have been seriously targeting drop off the radar for Coach Gill (because of the differing philosophies) but I think that we should still come out of it with a very solid class come Feb 1.
Differing philosophies? On field or off?

I'm betting most take a "wait-and-see" attitude. Wouldve likely been a different story if the last name was Bowden tho.

Again- southern mentality. Long way away from Buff, the MAC or KU

I agree but the fact that we're able to talk with coaches like Bowden, and hire ones like Gill, have to be scaring some local schools.

I would have been upset with a Bowden hire.

Probably not, but all Liberty employees are required to tithe to the Thomas Road Baptist Church, even if they don't belong to it. Call it a kickback.
Wasn't that actually policy for a while? I seem to remember some controversy about that back in the 80s ....

I just received an e-mail announcing the press conference tomorrow. In it, there is another nugget.
In addition to introducing Coach Gill, Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. and Athletics Director Jeff Barber will also make a special announcement about the future direction of your football program.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm? What could that be?

I'd like to wish Gill the best of luck. I don't have the venom that some of the KU fans seem to have towards the guy, but can't say that I have much positive to pass along either. I know you don't want anyone ruining your new coach buzz, so I thought I'd share some things that he is good at and avoid the negatives.

Recruiting. He was known as a good recruiter at Nebraska, and loaded up his staff with recruiters at KU. He brought in some decent talent to KU, and we have a pretty solid nucleus of young talent (at least according to the recruiting services)

Even keel. He is almost stoic, and hardly ever gets emotional on the sidelines. Saw him get emotional maybe 1-2 times on the sidelines in his two years at KU.

Has the ability to fire up his team for a good performance in an unexpected game. After losing to an FCS school in his first game, he knocked off a ranked Georgia Tech team.

Good person. One thing you will hear from everyone is how genuine Gill is. Classy to the core.

Likes having a personal relationship with his players. Treats them like they are adults and wants to be liked by them.

Things he needs to do to be successful:
Find a good S&C coach. The staff he hired at KU was extremely lazy, and had no accountability. This trickled down to the players and that attitude became widespread.

Find solid organizers and X's and O's guys for coordinators. Gill seemed to struggle with several aspects of running a program, and relied on his coordinators to handle a lot of things. He deferred to them a lot, and needs good ones to lean on.

I like Turner as a person, and think that coaching at a lower level might be the best for him; he was simply overmatched at the BCS level. I'll leave it at that, because saying more will just start sounding negative.

Seriously? I was thinking about going to sleep now that we have the HC situation figured out. Looks like it will be an all-nighter after all.

Not that you guys care, but here are my thoughts on Gill:

I'm not sure what I think. Yes, he is a known name, but my first thought of him is always ending up on ESPN's "Bottom 10" with Buffalo and stinking up the joint at Kansas.

I honestly hope he does well for you guys, other than when you play us
