I assume you are speaking of Rocco playing us. I dont really have much to say on the Asa deal but as far as Rocco goes, you cant get played when you see it coming.

And in reading what the AD said, it appeared he was shocked that there was such an outcry over the situation and said he did the right thing.....before he kicked the can to the chancellor. And of course none of this has anything to do with where we are and where DR is today.
I will always wonder if DR would be at UR if we'd gone to the play offs. Or somewhere better.

yeah, how many different people told us that? I was almost sure Escobar had planted the coke there to ruin him. I think any credibility that the Dean's office had (which is who I assume had the final say) is gone.

The article did seem to hint that the Deans office was going to be the fall guy. But also that they were only following orders.
I agree we are still waiting to hear from those who said The truth will come out. JB even made it sound like it already had but had just been distorted, or those who were critical of the decision didn't get the Truth Memo

Drug charge certified against Liberty Flames defensive player

LU officials address reinstatement of player facing charges
LU starter suspended following drug charges

Asa ChapmanBy: Chris Dumond

A felony cocaine charge was certified Wednesday against this season’s star defensive player for the Liberty Flames.

Asa Chapman started the season as a fourth-year defensive tackle with modest prospects of entering the NFL next year. Chapman was pulled over in late August, before the season started, for what could have been a routine stop for playing his stereo too loud.

Instead, authorities say they found marijuana and cocaine. Police also found Chapman was driving while his license was suspended. Furthermore, a judge had issued a warrant for his arrest last year when Chapman failed to show up for a November 2010 court date on an earlier charge of driving on a suspended driver’s license.

Chapman waived a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Lynchburg General District Court on the felony cocaine charge, which was certified to the Jan. 3 meeting of the Lynchburg grand jury for indictment.

Misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana, the second charge of driving on a suspended license and the noise charge were dropped by Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Kelly Osterbind. Osterbind said those charges will be presented along with the cocaine charge to the Jan. 3 grand jury for indictment so all his alleged offenses will be heard at the same time by a circuit court judge.

Chapman was convicted Wednesday of driving without a license in the 2010 incident and fined $50. He was held in contempt for failing to show up to court last year and fined an additional $50.

Chapman ignored questions as he left the courthouse, where he was driven away in a small SUV.

The 6-foot-5, 385-pound former All-American candidate was suspended for the first three games of the 2011 season after his arrest. He was reinstated after coach Danny Rocco said Chapman had engaged in counseling and community service.

Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. released a statement in September saying Chapman would not be treated differently than another student in the same situation — either with lenience as a football player or more harshly to make a public example.
The opportunity to play at Liberty University was a third chance for the Orange County native. Although he initially was offered a scholarship at the University of Virginia, the school cut ties when he couldn’t meet academic standards. West Virginia University also offered him a scholarship, but cut ties in 2007 when he was charged in Orange County with malicious wounding, a felony.
That charge was later dismissed.

Orange County court records show the reason Chapman’s license was suspended last year was because he failed to pay more than $300 in fines and costs from a June 2010 citation there for yet another incident of driving without a license. Those costs were paid off in September before he was reinstated to the football team.

Chapman played both the 2010 and 2011 seasons as a starter and finished out his NCAA eligibility this season. He was first scheduled to appear on his drug charges in September, but his court date was pushed back until Wednesday, two weeks after the season’s end.

Sure, Rocco is now gone, but all the guys that allowed this to happen are still here. Can't lay this one all on the guy who bolted.

I wonder if any of those who were clamoring for patience will now come on and say 'Ya know. It looks like we were wrong.'

I can see LU letting Asa stay in school to earn his degree, but he lost the right to wear a LU uniform the moment he was charged until the outcome was decided by the court, not the chancellor, AD or coach.

Im no lawyer so I wont comment on his waiving a right to a preliminary hearing and the implications that has on things. To be frank, and I know Im gonna get excoriated for this, but my opinion hasn't changed. The article mentioned what we pretty much already knew. The only real new piece of info that I found is that his fines and court costs were paid in September. His family may have paid that for all we know.

What is this "we got played" angle? We all know what happened. Our coach, AD, chancellor, and probably a few deans were all involved and didn't want to lose a very good football player from a team that should have made it to the playoffs. It didn't matter if that player was guilty or had a history of improprieties, football came first.

If you think that any other angles were at play, then I pity your ignorance. This was NEVER about "second chances" -- it's a "whatever numerical chance you're at after being academically disqualified, kicked off another team because of one felony charge, had multiple other violations and a warrant out for your arrest". There is NO WAY that the same grace would have been extended to anyone else at the school who wasn't an All-American.

Earlier in this thread, someone (before Asa was reinstated) said that putting him back on the program would sacrifice the integrity of our school. You could either have integrity or you could have a championship-caliber football team. You couldn't have both.

We wanted one. We got neither.

Asa wasn't going to be the difference in us winning or not winning the conference championship. I always felt that way.

Bottom line is Rocco was going "all in" on this season to try his best to raise his stock level to jump to another job. It was the AD and ultimately Jerry who let this go. I guess they trusted their football coach to make the decision in the best interest of the school, when apparently he (DR) was making decisions with his (DR's) best interests in mind and not the school's.

Good point -- although I don't know if Rocco had (from the beginning of the season) planned to jump to another job. If it had been his intention -- didn't he have offers from I-A schools (Army comes to mind) a few years ago? Why not jump then if you were going to do it?

It was all about this year's senior class - Mike Brown, Chris Summers, Asa, Bevins, etc. He's always hyped them up. I never thought he would leave prior to this season. Never did. I wasn't completely sold on him leaving after this year, but again not surprised in the least.
