I think all of us will be suprised to see the list of talent that are interested. I understand interest has come from Pro ranks, FBS schools, even the SEC. Barbor looking to hire within two weeks.

Someone posted all coaches are gone. Has that been verified? I know that most head coaches will clean house, some of the assistants at Liberty seem to do a great job.

Does anyone have any potential names that do not fit in the "reach" category (Gill, Tressel, etc.)? Hot FBS assistant or someone with previous ties to the program? Or maybe a retread like Jim Reid?

I'm thinking LU will try to make a big splash, but this could go many different ways.

Gill is not a reach for us. In fact, I think he is very achievable.

As for coaches with LU history that might be in play, the list is rather short. I would imagine that Coach Wachenheim will most certainly apply. I'm not sure Tony Dews is ready for a head coach slot just yet.

To be honest, we have a choice to make with this hire. Do we hire a young up & comer like we did with Rocco or go with a bigger name perhaps on the backside of his career like we did with Coach Rutigliano? The latter would make a bigger initial splash. The former might be what we need as we hopefully transition up to the FBS ranks.

Most will acknowledge that mistakes were made in the past. But I think we can all agree that Rocco's departure is a completely different beast.

The Rocco news broke as I was studying for a 3:30 exam. Talk about bad timing!

Just curious, and I have no idea to the logistics/details of it, does anyone think that we might start phase two of expansion soon to try and reel in a big name coach? I mean I'm just saying, I think you'd get a few more coaches interested, if you showed that you're going to grow despite Rocco.

I'm throwing a name in the hat...me. I never lose at NCAA 12 and I know almost every FCS nickname. Okay, seriously, Darrell Green. Someone talk that guy into coaching. His son currently plays at UVA (yuck but whatever) and I think any Redskin fan is aware of his NFL success. He's a devout Christian and has connections into the Texas market.

I deleted my statement/gripe, and if the others guys do so as well, there will be no record of it.

Didn't Dews just go w/ RichRod to AZ? In regards to Wanchenheim, I can't support anyone that was part of the Zorn era in Washington, haha.

Yeah, I listed the link earlier today in regard to Dews. He's always been a position coach. We likely won't consider anyone without at least coordinator experience unless they bring something exceptionally dynamic to the table.

I think the new BIG NAME "TAKE LU TO FBS" coach has already been chosen....

It was probably make the play-offs or he is coming in.... We'll get a name in the next two weeks, after Rocco leaving has calmed down.

I would expect a VERY big name [ ex-Pro ] to hype recruiting and go to FBS

.

Why would someone who has shown his character to be that of someone who lies about things on a constant basis be a consideration for LU? Add in the fact that he may be getting slapped with a show cause penalty, and not allowed to coach anywhere for a couple of years, and I would actively root against LU for this kind of character impaired hire.

I agree, it's almost a slap in the face to the program for him to move to a 3-8 in-state FBS program.
That in state FCS program won a National Championship 4 years ago and didn't drop off until making a bad coaching hire when their previous coach made the jump to the FBS. Richmond is a better football program in a much better conference.

No players of note are going anywhere, especially those who have already red-shirted. Now is the time to do a quality job of hiring and try to take the next step as a program.

Folks, Turner Gill has 6 years of head coaching experience and 1 winning season. He's not a good head coach. Half of his coaching seasons are 3 wins or less. He's 25-49 overall. He's a name, but for all the wrong reasons at head coach.

So... Taking a 2-10 team and bringing them to a bowl game within 2 years is not a sign of a good coach? :dontgetit

And dropping right back off the next year?

His coaching career is the definition of "One of these things is different from the other ones."

He coached at Buffalo and Kansas. I don't think you understand how bad those programs are.

I understand quite well.

Kansas had made bowl games in 3 of the 5 years before he got there. His recruiting classes were rated near the bottom of FBS both years.

Buffalo made the FBS jump for no discernible reason. He got a 1 year bump in his record and that was the end of it. Nobody is clamoring for the return of Craig Cirbus at Buffalo and he got the same 1 year bump, at the FCS level, that Gill got and dropped right back off himself.

If Gill shows up at LU, I'll cheer him on but I won't expect anything based off of 1 good head coaching year in 6.
