BJU Board Approves Pursuit of Application Process for Regional Accreditation

GREENVILLE, S.C., (Dec. 5, 2011) . . . At its regularly scheduled meeting Dec. 2, 2011, the Bob Jones University Board of Trustees unanimously granted approval for the University to pursue the process of applying for regional accreditation. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) is the regional accrediting association for colleges in South Carolina as well as ten other southeastern states.

For those of us who remember BJU mocking us back in the day for getting accredited by a secular body this is a hoot. They've been accredited by Forest-based TRACS.

I'm guessing this is the same meeting where Chuck Phelps finally stepped down from their board.

Handling of church rape criticized

The former pastor of Trinity Baptist Church resigned from the board of Bob Jones University on Friday after alumni demanded he be removed for the way he handled the rape of a teenage church member in 1997.

The Rev. Chuck Phelps, who led the Concord church from 1989 to 2007, did not return a message yesterday left at his current congregation in Indiana. According to the Bob Jones website, Phelps resigned his board seat because he "did not want anything to distract (Bob Jones University) from its mission."

Most of their faculty have their undergraduate and graduate degrees from Bob Jones, which is not something that SACS will look at very favorably.

SACS will want to see faculty who have degrees from regionally accredited colleges and universities.

The high school I graduated from used to be a part of the same athletic conference as Trinity Baptist. They are the largest church in NH if I remember correctly, and used to annually hold a Fine Arts competition that my school was a part of. When all of those allegations went down all I can say is that the Christian church in NH took a big hit from the media. Especially since Trinity Baptist is in the mold of a BJU and PCC type church. I still can't believe how the church handled the entire situation, and frankly how some of their church leaders are still employed..

The high school I graduated from sent a lot of kids to BJU and PCC. I remember the "guidance counselor" arguing with me because I chose Liberty. My main argument was that LU was accredited and BJU/PCC were not (that and there was no way I'd go live under their rules - LU was strict enough). I was told that accreditation by a secular body went against Christian principles. My teachers always argued that BJU was respected enough in its own right that they didn't need accreditation. I guess they finally realized what BS that was. I agree that they'll have a hard time gaining accreditation due to the facts listed previously about their faculty not having degrees from an accredited university.
