The local fishwrap said says tipoff is at 2:00 (less than an hour) but that it will be shown on the Liberty Channel at 7:00. The paper also lists seating capacity at 999.
Flames limp into key game with Coastal Carolina
By: Chris Lang
Published: December 02, 2011

CONWAY, S.C. — Like many on Liberty’s basketball team this season, center Joel Vander Pol has been playing hurt. The injury list heading into the start of the Big South season for the Flames was lengthy. Forward John Brown and Sommy Ogukwe were already out for the season with knee injuries. Freshman forward Tomasz Gielo has yet to play after suffering a dislocated elbow in an October practice. Wing David Minaya [groin] and forward Antwan Burrus [concussion] played through pain Thursday at Campbell.

Vander Pol has not been exempt.

“I had a herniated disc in my back,” he said after a career-best night, 20 points and nine rebounds, at Campbell on Thursday. “It’s just been something I’ve been getting therapy for. I’ve been rehabbing with [trainer] Aaron [Schreiner] every day. It’s affected me, there’s pain in my leg. But once I get going in the game and get it warmed up, it’s not too bad.”...

“Joel was as good as anybody on the court tonight,” Liberty coach Dale Layer said. “Joel’s been battling some injuries. He looks better. He’s moving better. He’s a little more confident. He took the challenge of playing against Griffin very personally and seriously, and it was good to see Joel step up. He works extremely hard, and he continues to improve.”

That improvement will be tested again today when the Flames make [presumably] their final regular-season trip to Coastal Carolina’s tiny Kimbel Arena to face the Chanticleers. Tip off is at 2 p.m. The Chants were expected to move into their new, 3,200-seat campus arena this season, but construction delays have forced Coastal to play this season out at cozy Kimbel, which seats 999.

LU is fighting back and cut it to 6.

Coastal now shooting 50% (7-14) from 3-point land.

Halftime:
Coastal 43
Liberty 36

Coastal has out scored us 21-0 from the 3 point line.

There are loses and then there are loses. 10 pts at Coastal with our injuries is not a bad showing. Yes I probably have lowered expectations this year but since they exceeded them last year it's a wash :D

I agree Purple. CC has beaten Clemson and LSU on the road this year, so I don't think we should be too embarassed to lose by 10 at their place. This team has some big adjustments to make. They played in Europe with JB, Sommy and Gielo, and now they have to make it work without them. I think getting Gielo in the rotation at the 4/5 will be a big help when he returns.

I'm glad we're in full excuse mode.

No reason to be okay with 2-7, 0-2.

Wonder why JVP didn't have a good game. Maybe because his confidence is down after only playing 22 minutes in the best game of his career?

I really liked Dale on his way in, but it seems he got away from what he does. Joel and Antwan should both be All-Big South team players at the end of the year, but instead, we run a ton of guards and don't feed the post as much as we should. JCS and Ethan should be able to play 10-15 minutes each at the 2 and get 5 open looks each from 3 from playing inside-out.

Oh well. Maybe next year? I would be excited about Gielo coming back, but all he's going to do is play the 4 or even 5 and make us smaller, versus being the 3 and giving us a bigger lineup. Just wish Dale could play like this.... http://espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?replayId=2209 Matt Nelson a 7 footer dominating the post, Matt Greene a 6-8 forward off the bench.

Where did that Dale go? (Although I will admit, Dale was never that great in the regular season at CSU...)

I expect more out of Dale.

I knew the Big South was getting better without us. I figured Dale might fix that. Doesn't look like that's the case.

team is just not athletic. no one can guard one on one, so you can't play man to man and they are slow in their defensive rotations, leaving open threes.

I think Dale is an alright coach, he got the team to overachieve last year but just looking at some of recruits he's bringing in it's not going to change.

three-5'10 players. then you have kermite and donley, shooters.

What's with the apathy over this program? Our RPI is in the 300s and tanking. We are an embarrassment right now but it's ok because of injuries

I thought so too, but there just isn't any consistency. Either transfers, injuries or something. I always like to give a coach 4 years to get things in place. If after year 4 or 5 we are in the same point we are now then I will start to worry. I really like Dale and want to see him succeed along with our program. We shall see..

That's the reason I'm not clamoring for Dale to leave. I know he can do better. And he's a great guy. He's the kind of guy who will really build a program here.

Don't forget, those wins were with a healthy CCU team. We are banged up now. Kierre was about 75% after rupturing a cyst in his calf and having it drained Friday, and Pack has 2 dislocated fingers on one hand and a jammed wrist on the other.
