Well the NBA lockout just got VERY ugly. The NBA rejected the owners proposal today. The NBPA has filed a disclaimer of interest, effectively dissolving the union into a trade association. The players will file an anti-trust lawsuit against the owners within 48 hours. The season is assuredly lost without a big miracle and it will potentially put multiple seasons in jeopardy if it goes to trial.

I usually side with the players in these types of situations, but the owners have to make a change. They, as a whole, are losing money. The players are vastly overpaid which is the owners' fault, but those same owners have to reign it back in for the league to be profitable. Sure, losing a chunk of salary is a hard pill to swallow, but losing an entire season is just foolish. The players will never recoup the money they'll end up losing. I blame both sides for not working hard enough over the summer to get this thing nailed down. At this point, I'd be surprised if there is a season at all.

I don't care about the NBA, but just remember. No games = No money. For anybody. It's both sides' fault, and from what I've read honestly the NBA should eliminate some teams. At least that what seems the most economic sense.

Its greed all around but the owners did get themselves into this mess by spending WAY too much for players that didn't deserve it. I still don't feel bad for the players. They are trying to paint themselves as victims but its a little hard to feel bad for them. My job isn't exactly the toughest in them military but I have to deal with more crap then they ever could even dream of...so yeah I think they should just shut up and play

I love basketball including the NBA. I think it has become more team oriented the last 10 years despite the NBA marketing individuality which does the league an injustice, but pulling crap like this is going to make them lose the few fans like myself they have. They need to be careful.

And the issue I have is that the NBA claimed to be lose $300 million last year. The players already have given back $350 million a year, with no growth factored in. The NBA is projected there to be 5-6% average annual growth. What the players have already given back more than makes up for what they allegedly lost last year. If there is 5-6% growth, it can only be assumed that the $350m a year will only be more in forthcoming years. The owners keep saying what the players have been offering isn't good enough. The current proposal they submitted to the players would have been making them money based on their own projections, but the players are greedy and they aren't? They already had a blowout W, instead of winning by 20 they wanted to win by 30-40...

Bottom line is this. It's a classic economics lesson. They all have to find the curve where players can make the most money, with the owners still having the means to send out paychecks and make a profit.

The NBA has to find that place. But considering the character of many of its players, I'm not surprised that the players are economically ignorant.

Eliminating teams would create scarcity, which would drive the price up for players. In the same way, inefficient teams are cut out from the market, and thus eliminated. This would be the best solution for the NBA to take.

Exactly.

But as for the lockout, neither side is coming out of this looking good, and it is a shame. The league had a ton of momentum and positive goodwill from last season, and all of that has gone down the drain (and then some).

As a Detroit Pistons fan, I too applaud the loss of the season. Thank you for sparing me, college is king, go UConn.

I guess that means I will be watching one less NBA game this year than I did last. Or was that two years ago? whatever.

one thing I won't miss by the season being cancelled (which is what is going to happen) is that completely ridiculous reasons why the majority of this board hates the nba. The reasons given for the hate are never accurate.

I agree with JBock. What is this world coming to?

Remember how popular hockey was at one time? Maybe that was just up North. But it seemed like it was right up there with the NBA and MLB and then they went on strike and it seems like they never got those fans back. Same thing happened to baseball a couple decades ago. It solidified baseball's declining interest.

I just don't like it. My personal taste in basketball is for a much more team oriented game. Is that inaccurate?

And I've never understood why people go out of their way to give their opinions about the issues of a sport that they don't watch or don't like. If I didn't watch or care for the NBA, I'm not sure why I'd even go to a thread about the sport. I know if there was a WNBA thread, I wouldn't even want to read it, because I simply don't care about the sport.

Yes. You don't know anything about the NBA or refuse to believe otherwise if that is still your sentiment.

Have we met? I didn't think so. I have not said anyone who likes the NBA is crazy or anything like that. If you like it that is wonderful. MY PREFERENCE is for a different style game. When I said I'd only watched one game in the past year I was exaggerating how little I watch. I have seen enough to know that I don't care for the NBA games. THAT IS NOT INACCURATE! That is my opinion about it and I think that is my entitlement. For you NBA fans to get defensive about someone's preference is a little silly.

I think you need to go back and read your original post. Your insinuation that the NBA isn't a team oriented game is inaccurate...

Dude, I actually enjoy the NBA for the most part and I can't agree that the NBA brand of basketball is a team sport. The rules are set up to give superstars one-on-one isolation opportunities. While there are some team elements as we saw from the Mavs in the Finals, the fact that three superstars can get on same team and essentially just bully their way to the Finals is evidence that team ball is not absolutely necessary or appreciated in today's game.

PS - I haven't missed the NBA even for a second this season. Then again, I am in shock at having to depend on Matt Leinart right now. Ugh.

My opinion based on what I have seen over the years is that it is not a team oriented game like it used to be (see Larry Bird's Celtic teams - yeah I am at least that old). Call me wrong or ignorant or whatever. That won't change my opinion. I have tried to watch but usually get bored with it. Sorry.
ps- See SlyFox's post. Much more eloquent and informed than my lowly, opinionated post.
