First of, before anything else, congrats on the jerk-whipping you delivered to us.

The drive up there was ridiculous. There is no main road (interstate) to get up there other than being on 85 for a whole 4 miles lol so we had to take a lot of back roads. I followed SJ's directions and they did get us there. We were tempted to just drive east until we got to 95 and then just take that South, but it was way out of the way. We stayed at the Sleep Inn right across the street from the campus and there were some LU fans there who were giving me the stink eye as I walked through the hotel in a teal hat, and shirt with CCU wind pants on :P On Saturday, we checked out around 10:45 and drove over to campus and drove through it to see what it looked like, the facilities etc. After that we went up to Appomattox to see the Court House etc and it was really nice, and a good thing to kill the 4 hours we had between checkout and kick-off. We left there and grabbed lunch before heading over to the stadium around 2:30 - I'm not huge on tailgating as I don't drink.

Fans: I had no issues with fans. Some people driving by would say Go LU, or CCU sucks, but that was about as bad as it got. The people I asked questions to were more than helpful. I got to meet the almighty SJ at halftime on the concourse. You're a good guy SJ :D One fan that was sitting near us was...interesting he looked like he was stuck in a 1980s time warp and had some really old Liberty Lacross jacket.

Campus: Very nice views of the mountains. Some buildings looked very nice from the outside, while others looked too "sanitary" to me. More like a hospital. The first time I noticed the ski slope was from an angle (from our hotel) and I thought it was a mansion, but when we (g/f and I) turned the corner we saw the slope and that looks amazing! SJ told me that we needed to go up there just to look at the chalet, but we were heading home that night after the game and did not get a chance to...next time we will and maybe (if we are allowed to) I will embarrass myself by trying to ski/snowboard down that mountain  If I was an outsider to CCU/LU/BSC and someone had told me that LU and CCU were in the same conference and rivals etc I would think that either CCU's campus is minor league or that LU is full of richa** kids. I know both are generalizations.

Stadium: Very nice. Only a few things that I had a gripe with. The first was the volume of the scoreboard, but that might have been b/c we were in the section right next to it. The other thing was that horrific video/music video of the guy rapping about Liberty. That was just way too over the top, and probably the longest music video ever lol!

Area around the campus: It didn't seem like there is a whole helluva lot to do off campus other than going to Appomattox and maybe Charlottsville. I talked to SJ about it and he said there isn't too much, but since you guys have so much on campus, that definitely makes up for it.

Overall: Good trip minus the football game lol.

Thanks for the summary.

Here's a couple other observations I read at coastalfans.com
Captain Cluck wrote:Game experience at Liberty is second-to-none in this league and outside of App and Ga Southern, I can't remember a better game-day atmosphere I have seen at the FCS level with this program. It truly is remarkable to see just how far that has come since our first trip up there in 03. The atmospheres in 03 and 05 were dreadful...just nothing going on. Small, cramped press box, no amenities, not much excitement, nobody there...nothing.

Now...well...it's a totally different universe. People are all over the place, making noise, tailgating, being a factor (just glad they didn't chuck batteries our way this year). The new press box is amazing. We got a tour on Friday...the luxury suites are top-notch. If I had about 22 grand I might buy one too. I do think some of it is overkill, though. 30 minutes of fireworks is a little much. And we're trying to get out there for the coin toss, and we got some guy running around in the middle of the field trying to rev up the crowd, as if they needed more of that....
Big Daddy Bennet wrote:As much as I hate to say it, I thought that the gameday atmosphere was really special. I was VERY impressed by Liberty's facility and crowd involvement. The band, the students, the cheerleaders, all of it was really over the top in comparison to any other school in our conference. After going to that game, I do not see where any team other than Liberty has a reason to be at the top of our conference. You guys should be moving to FBS. You have everything in place to do it.

About the noise bodoyle, the reason why the sound is so loud is because it does not travel well to the 2nd level. I sat above the CCU section in the 2nd level and I could barely hear the music at all (also, the wind affected the sound terribly too). So that's why it was really loud. I'm glad you had a good time at the game, despite the circumstances

If you guys look towards the FOC, there are two big speaker stacks for the entire stadium. I think that needs to be revamped next year.

Sitting in the 2nd deck on the opposite side of the 50 from the FOC, and I made the comment Saturday that the speakers seemed like they were turned down this week. I could barely hear it.

Coming from someone who has been in radio and sound reinforcement to a small degree, Id go with one on each end of the bleachers (you can make this happen on the student side when the next phase of the expansion goes in) and also two or three small banks of speakers on the concourse. thatll maximize the sound, although one thing with there is it can have a bit of a cavern effect to the sound.

Football Operations Center. Basically our locker room - the building the scoreboard sits on.

Glad you had a good trip (minus the score of the game). I am excited about the game atmosphere that the fans create. Come back and visit us again sometime, you are always welcome.

therealbodoyle, I was hoping you would make a comment about all the dog/cat references.
BJ invited you to our tailgate, and we had a hanging rooster for you in case you showed up.

I know. I wish I could have made it over there but Appomattox took longer than anticipated.

The one thing I didn't get was why, in the student section, was the guys in orange with a kitty cat sign not even behind the team? Is the student section first come first serve, or assigned seats?

Its first come first served...back in the era of the LUnatics (SJ and a few others can verify this) a few years ago, they had to get into the stadium literally right as the gates opened so they could stake their seats right behind the opposing team (course those seats eventually started being reserved thanks to connections with the chancellor and his wife)

hi. my dorm and I were the kittycats. we got exactly the spot we wanted, behind the defenses bench. I had a Venezuela literally within 6 inches of the exercise bike. they also moved the benches away from us by a few feet after we got there (we were there at 1:30, they moved the benches at 2). we had 3 of our guys do roccotown and camped out so we could get exactly the spot we wanted. we had many fun (for us) conversations with josh norman, phillip ( i dont know his last name(#43)] and #66. josh was a very good sport dealing with us. the other two guys... less so.

REAL You passed by my house on your way to the place where "The Nation Reunited"!! You should have stopped in. Plus, the Shell station at the bottom of the hill has the worlds BEST fried chicken!! (Pun actually NOT intended!)
I will take exception to a few things in your post:
1. You said "Wind Pants" then busted on someone stuck in the 80's. Really? Are you sure you aren't covering for your parachute pants???
2. You and your girlfiend? In a hotel together? I am sure you had seperate rooms!!! :D :D
3. If it is too loud you are too OLD!!!

Glad you enjoyed your trip! And yes, there is no good way to get here from there. And by "there" I mean anywhere!

You can't ask for any more from the fans than to plant Venezuela right behind the opponent's defense. I wish I could have been there; I understand that a few Coastalfans made it out to meet some of us; some of the good times I have had at games include several instances of getting aquainted with the other team's fans. I'm glad the Coastal fans enjoyed the atmosphere and hope for more of that in the future.

Of course I knew of the vuvuzela- not a soccer fan, but I have been following GaSt's development over the last couple of years. Vuvuzelas are all the rage among GaSt fans.

1) Parachute pants? Hahaha, never owned a pair of those lol. These aren't exactly wind pants, but that is the easiest way to describe them. They're made out of some mesh thing, I dunno lol.
2) Absolutely! She was on the third floor left corner, and I was first floor right corner and we didn't even hold hands or have breakfast together
3) I have no problem with the fans being loud, I'm all about that, but the noise from the scoreboard is ridiculous. But I'm the same guy who has never been to a concert b/c the noise is too dang loud and I will get a horrific headache :(

 They have been upgrading HYW 29 to I-785 status for 25 years .... maybe it will be classified "shovel ready" and get some immediate attention.

Wasn't on 501 at all.

On Hwy 9 for a long time, and 220. That's all I remember.
