YaYa Anderson
6' 2" Point Guard
Fluvanna County (VA) High School
AAU: East Coast Fusion

“He’s been busy,” Fluvanna assistant Nick Ward said of Anderson. “He’s got probably 20-plus offers right now from in-state and out-of-state schools up and down the East Coast. He played for the East Coast Fusion AAU team and they did a great job getting him exposure during the summer.”

Central Virginia fans were well aware of the 6-foot-2 point guard during the regular season last winter, but he made a name for himself on a bigger stage with a 47-point performance in the state quarterfinals and continued scoring at a high rate in the AAU season.

Ward said Radford, Duquesne, St. Joseph’s, Liberty, JMU and Wofford are among the schools recruiting Anderson the hardest. Virginia showed interest in Anderson, who according to Ward is fully qualified academically and earning straight A’s this semester, last spring. But it seems the Cavaliers have cooled on the local product as of late.

Have you seen the state of free throw shooting in modern basketball?

Liberty didn't have a single regular last year who shot over 76.2% and only return 3 players who shot over 70% for this season. A kid that can drive, dish, and make free throws is a rare combination these days.

Free throws don't need to be in highlight tapes. That's what stats are for. Free throw % generally always translates from high school to college to nba. If you can shoot FTs in high school, you'll be able to shoot it in college. Players may get better at it or they may decrease a couple percentage points, but they don't generally see a significant decline in their FT% by moving up a level.

Free throws and rebounds are about the only two things that tend to translate well from level to level because it's more about what's in our head than what your basketball skills are. That's often why bad rebounders typically will always be bad rebounders throughout their career and bad free throw shooters will tend to always be bad free throw shooters. Sure some people improve (like Karl Malone's free throws) but that is the exception.

I wonder if there will be so many comments behind closed doors regarding the recruiting practices by the entire league with this one as well.

Anderson selected the Highlanders over a host of other suitors, including VCU, Liberty, The College of Charleston, UNC-Ashville and Mount St. Mary’s. There were a lot of factors involved in Anderson’s recruitment, but the school itself ultimately led him to Radford.

"I feel in love with [Radford] the first time I saw it." Anderson said. "It’s just a beautiful place and I knew that’s where I wanted to be."

Sounds like a kid who obviously had recruiting violations to me!

"Radford is beautiful".

Where? Which part? How come I've been there 10 times and not seen it? Is he talking about the 7/11 by the dorms where all the RU kids can come over and get their beer while screwing each other?
:D

For the record I know a ton of friends at Radford. And none of them would deny what I just said. :D

Which part is the insult? There are convince stores in Lynchburg, I know because I've bought beer in them. I know Liberty girls have sex, because I've had sex with them.

Wasn't meant to be an insult. Feel free to take your shots as I take mine :D

Wow, this went from a discussion went from a prospect we had some interest in months ago before we filled up our commitments and denigrated to this level. Ugh.

Congrats to Yaya on landing a scholarship and may he use it to better himself for his career.

Not surprising that a kid from Fluvana would think Radford is beautiful. Fluvana is like being in the Middle East. Radford is a dump and so is there bubble arena.

I will preface my post by saying I absolutely have a pro-Mike Jones bias as a VCU fan.

Radford is and has been a horrible D1 basketball program for the vast majority of its history. Mike Jones is a heck of a coach and a ridiculously good hire for Radford. I would not have expected them to make such a good move. He'll have that program making noise in the Big South sooner rather than later. This is a guy who Rivals listed as one of the top 25 recruiters in the country when he was an assistant at Georgia prior to joining the VCU staff. He's a great man with Christian values and he knows his basketball to boot.

YaYa Anderson is a guy that can score 2000 points in the Big South. He's a very talented and versatile scorer. Jones did look at him at VCU although we didn't offer as we filled our 2012 scholarships in June. Jones has been looking at a lot of guys at Radford that he evaluated at VCU that are plenty good for the Big South. The kid is a gamer and at Radford, he's going to have a ton of opportunity that he probably wouldn't have been afforded at a higher level.

I understand that anti-Radford sentiment given this is a rival Big South board, but Jones' is about as quality a hire as they could have got at the point they were at. He was a big part of VCU's success the last couple of years. If he can get players (and he's always been good at that), Radford will be a player, and quickly at that.

That is NOT true. You obviously don't know your BIg South History. Oliver Purnell was once the coach their and they were good. Dr. Ron Bradley took over and was the MOST consistent program during the 90's. Bryon Samuel was okay had a couple of good years. And Greenberg won a title but lost control of his program.. Horrible, no! Average, yes! Just like most of the BSC programs during their history. In the last 20 years they have the same amount of NCAA tournament appearnaces as LU, which is 2.

Sorry, I stand corrected. You haven't been horrible your whole history. Just last year. I wouldn't call 2 NCAA appearances in 20 years average, but to each his own.

Either way, I think Jones will have you guys on the upswing. He's a good coach and a better man. He has a bunch of guys there that VCU evaluated. Amdy Fall is a sleeper big that could end up being a good one. Good luck to you guys.
