IMHO

Spent some time talking with a well known Liberty alum. He made a sad analogy that I think sums up what many of us " old folks " feel when we see the direction LU has been heading. He said , " I suppose if the rapture were to happen tomorrow, about 80 % of the football and baseball program could still field their teams going forward...and Flames would still be the right name " !

None of the " old folks " care about the cash being made online...or the amazing new facilities. What matters is what lasts forever !

Of course the comment was tongue and cheek and the percentages were a guess. But the point of te comment was not lost on me and crystal clear. But then again...we don't matter...were the " old folks " !

Leadership is asleep in the light !

I seem to remember a post you wrote some time ago that I thought was well reasoned...You said

I am hoping Jerry Jr gets the point and doesn't get too offended by the comments of many who still love LU. Another verse that is appropriate is " better the wound of a friend than a point of a spear " !

What next? A battle of Aesops Greatest hits? I mean playing the " my scripture reference is more valid then your scripture reference" is really a stereotypical Baptist game :D

I find it WAY out of line to say "80% of the football and baseball teams (aren't saved)"

Man - didn't we just finish a thread just like this?

Thugs? Come on - go meet some of the players - they AREN'T thugs... Man - what a judgmental thing to say and to classify a group that way is way over the top and uncalled for. I think the point Natural is making is somewhat true - we have lowered our standards a little to compete for some talented recruits, but I personally don't think that if I was coach, I would do it differently. Liberty has never claimed to have a student body made up of 100% Christians, but it should be a good environment to encourage a relationship with Christ and growth. I think Rocco and Liberty have done this very well... BUT, there will be some backsliding every once in a while. We are all human and make mistakes. You never know - maybe some unsaved athletes will come here and get saved and make a huge impact for Christ one day...

I would dare say that I am the oldest rat in this barn as far as LU goes. I have had family play on the baseball teams in the past and I have been a member of the Flames Club all the way back to when it was called the Talon Club. I have also played for LU, but too many moons ago to be relevant. I will respectfully disagree with "well know LU alum". The percentages he/she used are way too high in my opinion. We no longer require that students provide a acclamation of faith to attend LU. I believe that is a good thing. LU exists to minister to both saved and unsaved, for lack of better terms.
Until I find out any different information, I am going to support the decision made by the leadership of the school. I have been afraid for years that we may go down the slippery slope and no longer become a distinctively Christian university, but so far we have not done so. IMVVHO.

As far as a previous post, that says many donors are done with supporting LU athletics, unless his last name is Williams, I am sure no one is really concerned. The $1million the Flames Club brings in, is really a drop in the bucket in the overall scheme of things. In addition, I could say that I have talked to many donors who said because of this decision, they were going to give more money to LU, and there is just as much proof of my claim being valid as yours.

:D Carry On.

This debate is mostly about the "Liberty Way", it's enforcement with athletes and the Universities reputation. All of which are very important.

With that being said, can someone explain to me what "Purple Haize" implies. Is it a play on words, with Purple Haze? I bet most visitors to this forum from other Universities wonder the same thing?

What is the meaning of a signature saying, "Suck on my Funk and Wagnalls!" Sounds pretty warped to me .... but what do I know, I'M just an old guy that loves JFJR and Liberty U. I'M sure IM totally out of touch with you young folks? Please forgive me for asking?

Actually it should be right up your alley. Most of the youngsters wouldn't get either the musical or encyclopedic/ dictionary reference.

Well the first originated in the drug culture. And the words "suck on my" confused me, didn't seem to apply. Seems like a weird choice for LU guy. Was just wondering. Thanks.

the truth lies somewhere in the middle of the two arguments here. The players put too many things public on facebook to try to act like we have a team of choir boys. However, there are a good number of quality guys on the team as well. I have an issue with the lack of discipline and it isn't just Asa, it started (for me) with a situation back in the summer before camp and the decision about Chapman made me question even more.

You call in the drug culture, I call it a masterful piece of art. Ever wonder how many song Bach Mozart and the boys wrote hopped up on opium and coke (tactfully refraining from sidebar...)
As for the tag line it served it's purpose. With many debates today ending in personal attacks or various forms of " suck it" ( thank you Vince McMahon). By putting a well know lexicon at the end gives one pause while also intimating that your mastery of the English language is far greater then that of the accuser. So breaking down the phrase.. Suck on my: this starts the rebuttal at the base level. It is easy enough to understand and gives your opponent a false sense of how things will play out. Funk and Wagnalls... This then throws your adversary into a quandary. First off, the phrase did not conclude where they thought it would. They then rack their brains thinking of any double entendra and when this fails search their slang thesaurus to see if it has some old school meaning. While they are processing this, it allows you the opportunity to either disengage or pursue in a more vigorous and unimpeded manner the point in contention. Finally, as your assailant looks up the meaning of Funk and Wagnalls, they are tormented by inner shame at not knowing what it is in the first place and doubly so when they eventually figure out that you were calling them ignorant. It's the jab that keeps on jabbing!
Hopefully that puts your troubled little mind at ease. :)

Obviously the entire team arent THUGS.....But how many THUGS are we willing to put up with?

How many curent drug users are we willing to accept on our football team? ....After all....we can witness to them ...right?

To say that Liberty is for the saved and unsaved misses the point.....Isnt JMU for the saved and unsaved , also?

Are we becoming less NOTICABLY diffferent all the time?

I think everyone agrees..that LU has loosened up the standards on who they will recruit ..and play for that matter...

My original point was......WITH THE LOOSE STANDARDS...WE STILL ARENT WINNING.....WE MIGHT HAVE HAD BETTER COACHING WHEN WE ONLY RECRUITED CHOIR BOYS BACK IN THE 80's AND BEAT JMU !!!

We have always been a team with a core of guys that are believers, coached by mostly believers. That's about the extent of it. We have always had guys who were unsaved, who had problems (just like believers do). I attended LU at the end of the Rutigliano era, and the beginning of the Karcher years. I was close to the football team the whole time. Some of you guys need to get your head out of the sand. It was the same then as it is now.

Again, I don't agree with the decision to reinstate, BUT those of you trying to turn this into "this wouldn't have happened 5 years ago" kind of thing are being pretty ignorant.
