Nice effort.

Bevins-esque.

Looking forward to having Alex around for another 3 years.

Wasn't. Wasn't nearly as far off as our oblivious announcers said it was.

come on guys...field goals are not problem today...sure he should have made the 30 yarder but that last attempt rocco just destroyed the confidence of a young kicker who had shown some promise.

This purpose is to encourage this kid.

If you want to chew him out, go another thread and do it.

I completely agree with this. I hate the decision to put him in that position. It's probably the best chance you got at winning, so it's got to be made. But you know a kid's range before you send him out there so I'm assuming he's hit it before.

I'm not in any way blaming Alex for the loss, but when you lose by 3, and you missed a 30 yard field goal, how is it not a problem?
Hmm. Okay. What about the 3 touchdowns that got called back? Those were touchdowns, correct?

I get it. You're angry, I'm angry. All I'm telling you is that this kid didn't lose the game. You saw the emotion on his face. He thought it was his fault. I'm just here to encourage him that he it wasn't his fault.

sure its a concern, but to me a a freshman backup kicker missing a 30 yarder is the way down the blame chart for this loss today. There are 50 other ways to look and blame more experience older players and coaches

Was just checking out this stream, and was reminded that a kid from New York was interested in Kicking and Quarterback. He did attend the camp in June, his youtube video was impressive, and so is the fact that according to maxpreps he was number one in kickoff yardage and touchbacks as Junior in all of new york state. Just checked numbers for this season and looks to be at the top again. His profile has him at 6'5'' 210lbs. Seems to me that he could certainly kick the ball to the endzone or farther.

You are 100% correct. This IS a problem. Just not Alexs. To have as many missed opportunities, with as many stupid penalties, that it then puts a freshman in that type of position IS a problem. As a coach It is important to put your players in positions where they can succeed. Whether or not a 30 yd field goal should be made oat the end of a big game is not an issue. Look how many kickers at 'big' schools miss those. What is at issues are the shortcomings that put the kid in that position in the first place.

There is a lot more to being a successful kicker than having a strong leg. Being able to put a kick-off into the endzone is great, but has little to do with being able to hit a 30-40 yard FG. Proper leg swing and foot placement, along with ball strike and lift are far more important. You also have to know what you are doing when you are lined up on the hash-marks, something that a lot of college kickers fail to grasp. Being a batting practice homerun hitter is great, but often fails to transition to the game, just like running around the field trying to show off in pre-game warm-ups how far you can kick a FG. Give me the kid who is a polished FG kicker in HS who comes from a program known for its kickers (I am sure the strength coaches will build up his leg if it needs it), over a kid who just kicks it as hard as he can hoping it goes through.

if we cant cover a kick any better than we have this year the kicker would have to kick one off the operation center to keep it from being returned to our side of the field anyway

So it doesn't matter how far you kick it, it just matters if it goes between the posts?

Thanks, I needed 5 posters to finally be able to figure that one out.

Kicking in football is just as much about how you are up here (points to head) as it is down here (points to leg). You can have a Howitzer for a leg, but if you arent mentally prepared every time you go out to kick, then of course youre not gonna do well.

DR in his presser said it was only 2-3 yards short of the crossbar

It looked about five yards short to me from my vantage point, though the Lehigh broadcast chose to not show a replay of the kick. It landed right in the middle of the end zone. I thought it might have been tipped because it kind of came out knuckly.
