Last week we were in town visiting and had dinner at the Millstone Tea Room out in the country on the road from Bedford to Big Island. Absolutely first rate but very unstuffy and friendly. Equal to the top restaurants in Seattle or Las Vegas etc. for about 2/3 the cost. Highly recommended.

The Millstone is in Sedalia (read: the middle of nowhere). It's right on 122 between Big Island and Bedford. I haven't been to the place myself (location, location, location) but I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I had a great squash soup with a perfectly seared scallop followed by tender lamb chop and slices of lamb loin with a light mix of grilled vegies. My wife had the homemade pasta appetizer with a very tender beef filet. We both had the dinner salad which was a nice mix of field greens and topped with mild blue cheese crumbles. For desserts we had bread pudding with homemade ice cream and a cream-filled pastry with ice cream and chocolate sauce. With a good bottle of wine our bill was $125. The August 2006 Virginia Living Magazine had a great review of the place. About half the dishes are fish or seafood and the menu changes daily.

But I have to admit squash soup doesn't sound particularly appetizing. But the rest sounds terrific.

Sly, I checked the menu, too. I'm with you. Those are some freaky items. Just give me a big old porterhouse and a baked potato and I'm happy.

Yup, not a steak and potato joint for sure. We like both a good steakhouse and something a little more complex and elegant. On our trip up to Lynchburg from New Orleans we ate at two famous BBQ places--Dreamland near the U of Alabama and Lexington BBQ in Lexington NC. We liked Dreamland and HATED Lexington. Blue Ridge Pig up near Wintergreen is FAR better and one of our favorites.

I never had squash soup before but it was excellent--a very smooth lightly creamy puree--no chunks of squash which I never liked either. Just a smooth subtle flavor in every spoonful.

If all they have is chopped pork count me out. That type of BBQ is not for me. I first ate BBQ in Austin, Texas and like strong smoke flavor with a few burnt spots on a good brisket. And ribs.

Don't read that rag:) The real magazine "Lynchburg Living" had a review on Millstone in their May/June Issue. Good place - lot's of atmosphere. Food's pretty good, but a little pricy. The best restaurants are coming in February to the Bluffwalk downtown. More to come - read the Jan Issue of Lynchburg Living.

You were very close to great barbecue in Austin. The best is located int he small towns not far from the capital. I'm curious where you ate there (that is my old stomping grounds prior to Houston). Central Texas is the barbecue mecca of the world although I'll give Memphis & KC credit for being close behind. NC barbecue is fine if you haven't the real deal.

And if you haven't guessed by now, badger, proto has a distinct interest in mentioning LL.

LL is a quality read. and any carolina barbecue either eastern or western is better than texas!!
