One thing I said earlier in the discussion (or something to that effect) was that we had missed opportunities tonight...in a big game like this, you cannot have a lot of missed opportunities if youre going to win. That was my point in bringing that bit of info up from the boxscore

If you're a fan of Liberty and you're in any way happy with what happened tonight, you should be ashamed of yourself.

And if you take this game as a "positive" and look forward to the future... the same applies.

There are no positives. We lost a game we should have won against a team that, quite frankly, will be on-par or worse with any team we face in a legitimate playoff game. (We might get lucky in the first round (should we make the playoffs, of course) and get an easier opponent...)

Montana would have blown the doors off of The Bill tonight if we had played like that. App would have made our entire student body cry if we played like that tonight. We just happened to be playing the one team with a lame enough offense to keep us in the game.

"Competing" "playing well" and "being with x points" is good for FBS games, and it'd be good if we were just your average Big South team.

But apparently, we need to get out of the Big South ASAP because it's not good enough for us, and find a new conference. Maybe JMU will move up with us...

or maybe JMU will continue to leave us in their wake. JMU has a better stadium and a better program. Let's work on getting to JMU's level before we worry about going FBS (unless all you want is a paycheck, but I don't want to become another Western Kentucky...)

Then why are you okay with the state of the team? This team has done nothing but miss opportunities for 3-4 years now.

TTL Im not taking this game as a positive...losing sucks...whether you lose by 3 or by 43...losing sucks...I just take more of an analytical view at losing, which is why I delve into box scores and stats like I do

Then why get mad at everyone for hating the fact that we lost?

I just don't get it.

I'll tell you what you can find in the box score. We gave up a ton of points to a team that rarely gets above 14 points. We didn't tackle, which shows in the rushing yards achieved by JMU. Penalties.

There is no "what-if" in a box score. There's nothing but facts, facts that involve LU losing to JMU for a 3rd year in a row, and LU failing to beat a team that's worth a darn once again.

I disagree about there being no positives. You can find positives in all things. Mike played well. BJ played great. Our student body showed up and were great fans. The production of the game was great. There were definitely positives within the big giant negative of us not being on par with what could be a mid-pack CAA team.

One negative can far outweigh the many positives and in this case it does.

We have to find our identity. We've been searching for it since Brock and Rashad graduated.

What's your point?
On second thought, I agree that people with critical views of Liberty should not be banned from this site. I was only suggesting that a board for Flames fans should actually be a board for fans of the Liberty Flames. Instead of banning people like BYD, maybe Sly could flag them so their comments are taken with a grain of salt so that true fans would view them just like they do posts from fans of our opponents. Lighten up, everyone. I'm just trying to get certain fans to admit they are not fans at all!

I really hope alum82 isn't who I think it is or who they're rumored to be. I'd hate to lose respect for someone that I have a ton of respect for currently.

What I gathered is that JMU did something we couldnt do early on...finish drives with points. LU certainly helped with positively asinine penalties and not tackling properly. The facts are the facts but that doesnt mean that Im not going to consider the fact that things could have been different. Matt can hit 40 yard field goals easy when he's healthy (remember he drilled one from I think 50+ against NC State).

It's been established we like to make t-shirts. let's print off some of the "best of" posts by an individual..make a t-shirt...then they have to sit with JLFjr at football game...or at the club level just in case the feel like they might go over the rail with the streamers at some point.

Then they are invited back once we win the Championship and maybe we'll let them back for the playoff game :)

SJ, I re-read my post and I can see now why you were offended. I didn't mean it the way you probably took it so I edited the post. Sorry for being careless. Not sure who you think I am but I would be glad to tell you. Just send a PM.

I agree things could have (and should have) been different. I don't think anyone here disagrees with that. I still fail to see why I am such a "negative" fan?

alum82 wrote:So, several JMU fans have posted here that they were impressed with Liberty's performance and with the team in general but, several of Liberty's so-called fans have declared here that Liberty football is an embarrassment, is not "big time", is not ready to "move up", is a joke? What is wrong with this picture? I'll tell you what is wrong. Certain people who post here posing as "fans" are really haters of Liberty. Sly, is there any way to keep fake Flames fans from posting on a board that is supposed to be for fans of Liberty athletics? Seriously, I think it is time to call certain "fans" out for what they really are and stop treating them like they want anything good to happen for Liberty.
Every time I wonder who can come with with the most illinformed post, you never fail to do dissapoint.

I mean I agree with alum to an extent, everyone who doesn't think losing is bad should be bannished. BANNISHED I SAY!!!

You see guys, I'm not a real Liberty fan. I stood out in the cold yesterday secretly hoping that JMU should win so that I could immediately log on to FF.com so I could happily rip into Liberty athletics. How alum82 found out about me, I have no idea. But thus wast my true intentions.

Of course I'm kidding. I don't agree with BJ for example, but at least I never stoop so low to level where I question his fanhood. No doubt BJ is one of the most passionate supporters of our school (at least as I see it). Quite frankly, if you think closing every close game is acceptable, if you think losing every big game is acceptable, in every one of our sports (except soccer), than quite frankly I question your fanhood alum82.

Well, take a deep sigh of relief jbock, TTL and BYD....Beeej just pardoned you.

Beej, make sure to let Sly know if you change your mind though.
Thanks Beej! :D

I'll admit I haven't been following the Flames that closely, so I don't know how often your team commits penaties or makes the the mistakes we saw against JMU and NCSU.

In your Big South games, 15 yard penalties and fumbles aren't killers because you can make that 2nd and 22 with ease...and if you don't, well, there's always that next possession, which you don't have to wait long for.

So, if your team is accustomed to a certain amount of wiggle room with errors and penalties, it may be difficult to adjust when facing a more talented team that actually makes you pay for your mistakes. You can't just flip a switch and be more disciplined for one game.

Anyway, just wondering if perhaps bad habits picked up playing weaker competition is what's making it so hard to get over that hump.

By the way, when I said "more talented team", I meant more talented than your regular season schedule...that may not have come out right before.

I grew up in VA BYD...Ive never known a day of living anywhere else...that being said, we may be like "little brother" (your words) but the way I see it, little brother has been getting his shots in. We arent the same team that JMU was beating by 30+ the last few meetings prior to the renewal in 2009. Id like to get wins over some of the top teams in our state just as much as anybody else on here. I know itll come, although like pretty much everyone here (well except our JMU friends who stopped by), we wish that it came last night

I disagree SJ, if you lost 75 lbs than you MIGHT be skinny.

There is a culture at Liberty where if you don't support 100% and view everything as rosey and fine, you are labeled a 'hater' and someone who is not a true fan. Which is interesting when a coach is replaced. I mean if everything was fine and rosy why change? Oh then we find that the old coach wasn't getting it done. Of course if you came to that conclusion on your own prior to the powers that be do then...see statement above. Therefore I find no reason to try and justify my 'fan Bonaparte fides' and don't think any one should have to.
We have come a long ways in the last several years for a variety of reasons. The team, IMO, had 3 chances to 'take the next step'. They let the first opportunity, beating JMU, slip through their arm tackles last nite. Number 2 would be winning the Big South. Granted some would say this isn't that big a deal since we have done it before, but this leads to opportunity 3. It would validate the program to win at least one game in the play offs.
Now to be REAL critical.....why were the fireworks Purple and gold when we scored? :)

That is valid question, Dukie95. To be honest, last night 's penalties were way over the top from what we are accustomed. Frankly that is the most embarrassing aspect for most of us.

the same level...I dont know. It really depends on how Gabe does Id think. If he is anything like MB minus the turnover issues, I think we could be even better. Its going to once again come down to the "hogmollies" up front. I wont give too deep an analysis on this til later in the year but I think that if Gabe Henderson is as good as advertised we could really light things up next year (and that is saying something)

What makes you think that Gabe even starts next year? We've got this kid who is a junior named Tyler Brennan. You may have heard of him.
