George HW was/is way more liberal than was Reagan. But by Reagan having him on the ticket it made 'old school' republicans more comfy with the ticket. It's what McCain did by putting Palin on the Ticket. It is what every ticket does. My thoughts are that while Romney may not be the most conservative in the bunch, by putting someone with Tea Party backing on the ticket will balance things out. The role of the vice president changed with W, and shouldn't be discounted too readily any longer.
Also, I think it would be a great move by whoever the nominee is to announce his cabinet before the election. Imagine if Romney is the nominee and he gets Newt to run Dept of Education, (or Chris Christy) Rudy as AG, Palin as Sec of Energy Santorum @ Homeline Security etc. THAT would be great
