The Pac-16 scenario is the only way I see Texas & Oklahoma (who incidentally are much bigger rivals than either with their primary in-state competitors) leaving the Big XII. But it is a distinct possibility. Of course, so is standing pat and adding one more team such as BYU.
If the Texas-OU exodus were to happen, that would spur Mizzou to accept an SEC invitation. The Big XII also rans would have some hard choices. Do they stick together and invite in some other regional schools such as Houston, Rice, SMU and Tulsa to form a decent mid-level league? If so, that throws the C-USA wide open for expansion.
Kansas & K-State are bound by legislative rule that they must stay in the same conference. So they would be a package deal for any other league which frankly hurts the Jayhawks' value. But perhaps they might be attractive to the Mountain West. Both have awesome hoops programs. But as we have witnessed in the past two years of realignment, that really doesn't carry the weight it once did.
Under any scenario that sees the Big XII come apart at the seams, Baylor & Iowa State are completely hosed. They have nothing to offer any solid leagues. Both have fringe alumni bases and deliver no TV markets. That's a recipe for disaster. They could remain the standard bearers for a re-worked Big XII as mentioned above or they would simply pray that the Mountain West sees enough value to avoid falling down to the C-USA level. Frankly I believe the Big XII will find a way to keep something together to help create a landing zone for the better Middle American mid-majors.
