by Lauren K. Ohnesorge

A recommendation on whether Appalachian State’s football program should move to the top level of Division I could finally be forthcoming, Chancellor Kenneth Peacock said Friday.

Peacock spoke at “Wake-up Watauga,” a live radio broadcast put on by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce at Dan’l Boone Inn, aimed at connecting Boone business professionals.

A repositioning study announced mid-May that its decision would be delayed. Friday, Peacock said the committee plans to meet Thursday.

“There’s not a consensus as to where they’re going at this point or where their recommendation might be,” he said.

Actually, it is a legitimate occupation per the Dictionary of Occupational Titles:
Title: Miller, Distiller
DOT Code: 521.362-014

Controls equipment to clean and grind whole grain for us in production of distilled liquors.

Of course, you said selling:
Sales Representative, Malt Liquor
DOT Code: 260.357-018

Yes, I'm this bored at work right now.

I think it would be a bad move for ASU to step up. No airport to fly in, and bad road leading up to Boone.

Not saying they should move up, but 421 is a quality four-lane road to the east and 321 to the south has improved. ASU's teams now fly charter out of Hickory, an hour away.

321 has improved as much as it can to Boone, the last part in is still two lanes and cannot be expanded.

Watauga (NC) Democrat wrote:No action taken on FBS study
by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Appalachian State’s Feasibility Committee took no action after its meeting Thursday.
The committee was formed to investigate whether the Mountaineers’ football team should make a move to become a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, or stay in the Football Championship Subdivision.

A recommendation was not made either way, according to a statement released by the univeristy’s athletic department Friday. There is also no time table to when a recommendation will be made.

The committee will recommend wither to stay in the FCS or to move to the FBS to chancellor Kenneth Peacock. He will then make his recommendation to the Board of Trustees.

“The committee continues to move towards making a recommendation to the ASU Board of Trustees. However, a recommendation was not determined on Thursday and a timeline for making a recommendation was not set,” the statement read.
No mention of any future meetings was mentioned.

Would love to see Appy State, JMU, and LU in the same FBS conference. Pipe dream?

starting to wonder- when we DO move up, will it be just in time for the BCS schools to break off and make yet another higher level, essentially putting us BACK in the second tier?

 lotsa time and money spent for no appreciable gain in that scenario

I think Sly is hoping for an East-West division of C-USA. It makes sense to me--esp. if Marshall is part of the East with LU, Appy, and JMU.

That's a possibility along with a potential new Mid-Atlantic (or perhaps even CAA step-up). Right now NCAA bylaws prohibit such a move. But frankly they are no position to turn anyone down as the big boys ponder stepping away.

PAmedic - In truth, we are really 3rd tier right now:
  • 1st - BCS League
    2nd - Non-BCS FBS Leagues
    3rd - FCS
Actually we might even be considered 4th tier. Even if the BCS leagues step away from the NCAA to run their own deal like they did with CFA, we would be in a much better position in 2nd Tier.

I think the CAA step-up is a growing possibility, but who knows at this point what will transpire. The trick to that possiblity would be for Marshall, and East Carolina, convincing their fans that they're not taking a step backward. From a travel standpoint for non-revenue sports, that alignment would make perfect sense.

I think Liberty---Independence.

Just for the fact Baptist and Conservative makes it hard to get accepted anywhere..ask BYU or Baylor and Texas aTm with the Pac-10.

they have the $ to make it happen. It allows them structure their own tv deals etc... ala ND. Liberty I think can make more money being Independent and I think can be more successful. JMO

You cannot enter FBS as an independent. If that were an option, we'd be there already. But once we are fully a member of the FBS, then we can look at our possibilities.

And Texas A&M was not interested in the Pac-10 every bit as much (likely much more) than vice versa. In major college football, revenue streams are valued much more than idealogy. BYU had lots of options outside of the Pac-10 (and even that is not beyond comprehension) but chose independence for football.

No biggie, ballah09.

Obviously league membership is an absolute must for every sport to secure automatic bids. That auto bid issue is also what makes forming a new league a challenge as it would have a waiting period before it would be eligible.
