LU - Name one athlete who has not been injured? It is a known risk. You may not plan on it but it is going to happen. How many weekend warriors injur themselves doing something they thought they could handle but ended up injured?
While I understand the history behind it I have never bought into the obsession of alcohol at the exclusion of all else that most protestants have. If you work at LU or are a student then don't drink alcohol. To me it is that simple. Otherwise, I am about as concerned about someone drinking as I am someone ordering extra fried rice!

I know i started this thread, however drinking at LU games is not that important to me. I was just curious. The responses have been well worded and thought provoking.

Not giving my school or myself or my Lord a bad name . That is important to me, and I can see it is just as important to most of you.

Playing Cornhole and having a TV at the tailgate to watch the opening Weekend of college Football are also important to me.

For the record, I don't think we can make blanket statements about Christendom's stance on alcohol based on North-South boundaries. I grew up in in the Appalachia/Midwest where frankly the stand on alcohol was much more pronounced than I ever experienced in my years in the South. Upon further clarification, I grew up entrenched in the Independent Baptist/GARBC/BBF subculture.

Today I probably stand closest to Phoenix in this thread based on my perspectives as a middle-aged dude (not surprising considering how our paths have crossed). Do I have the freedom in Christ to drink in moderation? Absolutely. Based on my personal experience & family history (that unfortunately includes a great deal of heartbreak due to alcoholism), for me it often is more of an issue of rebellion than the actual act of drinking. If I am drinking in a spirit based on me thumbing my nose at the Liberty Way or how I was raised then I personally view that as sin. For me, this comes into play frequently. I spent two decades working in TV sports where quietly abstaining was quickly noticed, challenged and often led to ostracism. But for many of my colleagues who had chosen lifestyles completely different than the path I'd chosen, I earned their respect which often led them to open doors to hear more about how I let God direct my life.

Yeah, I am probably getting too preachy. And I want the record to show that I have no problem with drinking in moderation.

As for the original premise of the thread, I would hope that if you are drinking in Raleigh that you would not do anything to damage the reputation of the school. What that looks like before the game is up to you.

Isn't gluttony frowned upon in scripture?

Sorry, it offends me more to see some 500 lb. NIV-toting woman in pants so tight it makes it look like pigs rolling in a blanket when she is walking, or running away from you towards the Sunday noon buffet at the Golden Corral for her fifth trip, then leaves a tract with no cash tip for the waitress, than someone cracking open a Bud Light.

Yes, it absolutely is a sin. But anytime we start comparing sins for justification we lose sight of what really matters IMHO.

I agree !
SLY I think you actually make mt point with out meaning too. I think it is great that you understand your family history and the role it could play in your life with regards to alcohol. When you talk about comparing sin is where I find insight. Is eating bad? Is it a sin? Is eating unhealthy food a sin? I am going to answer no to all of those. To add "in excess" at the end of those questions chafes the answers. IMO, the same can be said for drinking. Again if it is a policy where you work or attend school to avoid alcohol then avoid it As for anyone else over 21 decide for yourself. The key word is Moderation. Some people cannot drink alcohol in moderation. Some people can't eat deserts in moderation. I have a difficult time with fresh out of the fryer McDonalds fries! Add that to dipping them in a chocolate milkshake....I have to call my sponsor
