i like the hockey/basketball arena concept because it allows you to move seats behind the net and having the student section behind the nets is the best kind of home court imo.

it would allow for potential bigger crowds for mens/womens teams and if they do move up to d1, no new arena. It would also allow Lynchburg to potentially field a new minor league team, Hockey, like a ECHL or a AHL. alot of Hockey support when I was last there.

hmmm, moving basketball games to an off campus arena scares me. There's already an appalling lack of attendance (vs population) when all you bascially have to do is fall out of your dorm to be there.

Agreed. I was thinking about that this morning. I think if we moved the stadium off campus our attendance would drop. I would say drop significantly, but it can't really drop significantly since it's already so low.

I hate to say it, but we could probably get by with a 6,000 seat arena off campus and have PLENTY of room for growth.

How about another index called the Best of and move the rest of these threads there and clear up this section?

Or just click "view new posts" to see if anyone has written anything new. Works for me.

Who says it will be off campus? It will be on the outskirts of an ever growing larger campus.

Exactly every article I've read said it would be on or near Lib's campus but owned by the city. Don't create problems where there are none...are you on city council?

JPJ is not owned by UVA, sits on the very edge of campus, fits the archeticture of the rest of the school and definately is a home court advantage. If Liberty does have the fortune of this happening I hope that the same holds for LU's new Arena:)

Students are lazy, moving it further away from the campus population centers isn't going to help attendance any at all.

The new center should be closer to the Campus East apartments than Vines but a slightly longer walk for dorm circle residents. If this becomes a problem, we will run a lot of shuttle busses.

JPJ is owned by UVA but managed by a management company, SMG. It was designed first and foremost as UVA's basketball arena. With that said I think that it shouldn't be hard to find a design for a civic center that is functional for both the City of Lynchburg and Liberty. The location that I believe the Chancellor is talking about seems to be the best location for the civic center. My only concern would be accessibility but I think there is a plan for another off-ramp from 460-E between the 29 interchange and the on-ramp from Campus East?

Yes, the development plan for that site called for more highway ramps in addition to the new bridge we built a couple of years ago across from the airport. This is all still a long shot but I think it makes sense for LU and the Lynchburg region.

A civic center at that location would make 29 south of the airport prime for development. Just the railroad track makes it a little interesting.

Agreed...though if Lynchburg would move their Amtrak station there as well, it'd be interesting but an awesome opportunity to for retail/mixed use development. Lynchburg will never move the station, but it is fun to think about the possibilities.

I agree with ATrain...the city wouldnt move the Amtrak Station from Kemper Street but having been up and down 29/Wards Rd past the airport there is a ton of land there ripe for that purpose (development)

I'd never want to be the chancellor so I don't give two craps about the job.

I know you don't like him bj, but it was actually a good point. Any time the government is trying to decide to do something they end up spending so much money deciding if its a good idea or not...it doesn't take thousands of dollars to figure it out

ATrain, LU has offered to pay for a new train station at that site if the railroad will move it. I think Amtrak would probably have twice as many riders from Lynchburg if the station was in a convenient, safe location like the one across from the airport. Unfortunately, certain folks around here think it is more important for the station to be located near downtown Lynchburg than to actually have more people ride the train. ALUmnus, we did build a five lane bridge across the railroad tracks a couple of years back. That, along with the new highway ramps should solve the railroad issue.

BJ, if we ran LU this way and did feasibility studies before we built anything, we would still be trying to decide where to build the Vines Center. One of the reasons we are able to grow and change so much faster than the public universities is because we are not run by committee. I cancelled a parking lot last week the day before construction was to begin because we came up with a better idea for the space. I can't wait to announce what it will be but that's another subject.

You only have yourself to blame for this one, BJ. :D
