By popular demand, we are bringing back the ice cream/frozen yogurt competition. It is too bad the Purple Penguin can't be in the competition with it being in North Carolina and all. But there are some good options including the wildly popular Sweet Frog. Personally I miss Swensens in the Plaza. That chain is actually come back to life in California. Maybe someday ...

I loved the real vanilla Cokes you could get there. Many a movie and dessert date over at the Plaza back in the day ....

When Sweet Frog was first coming onto the scene, I would have jumped all over it as top frozen dessert. After letting the “honeymoon phase” subside, I realize it doesn’t compare with Coldstone. Sundae Grill would be my 2nd choice.

Ive always been a fan of Sundae Grill...and the owners there are the nicest people youll meet. Sweet Frog definitely comes in a close second for me with Coldstone right there in third. Ive always been a chocolate ice cream kind of guy, and all three have amazing flavors. Made my decision on which to vote for very difficult

This place needs to be at the top of the category....fantastic!

Cider...it is in the plaza on Timberlake Rd behind the Suntrust Bank and CVS at the corner of Timberlake and Waterlick

Mr. Goodies is on Timberlake, right next to CBS. I've never understood Lynchburg's obsession with it. It's incredibly popular, but honestly the ice cream is not very good. It used to taste like skim milk, though it's gotten better.

Is there really a TCBY in the area?

There's a new ice cream stand/snow shack type place way down at the west end of Timberlake that doesn't get any business......it used to be a hospice. I shudder every time I think about it.

I miss Billy Joe's.

Mr. Goodies is located in the parking lot behind the CVS at the Timberlake and Waterlick intersection. It is a carnival style concession stand and almost always has a line of 20 people. The brownie sundae is great and at just $4.50 is easily enough for two (although I rarely share). Also don't order a cone any bigger than a medium, their portions are crazy big. If you don't live on that side of town it's out of the way but worth the drive.

I feel like the reason it doesn't get any business is right in this sentence.

I listed TCBY because I saw a January 2011 story in the NewsAdvance saying it was coming this summer to Lynchburg. Perhaps it either didn't materialize or has yet to open.

As for Bahama Sno Shack, I was just listing it based on the Yelp love. If it is gone, so be it.

And I admit the last place we had ice cream in Lynchburg was at Billy Joes. So that should date my knowledge of this category.
