Liberty Volleyball Sweeps High Point

Liberty rebounded from a Friday evening setback to claim its first road win of the season, sweeping conference rival High Point, 3-0 (30-28, 30-22, 30-20) at the Millis Center Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Flames improved to 6-13 overall and 4-3 in the league with the victory. The Panthers are now 6-15 overall and 4-3 in Big South action. Liberty and High Point are now tied for third place in the conference standings.

Liberty jumped in front, 7-1 to start game one as Kallie Corbin (Fr., S, Beaverton, Ore.) got the Lady Flames off to a fast start. She recorded three assists, a kill and a service ace during that match-opening run.

The Lady Flames maintained a comfortable margin until HPU rallied to trim the deficit to three points at 21-18. Liberty pushed back ahead with four straight points and then held on for the two-point win. High Point battled off four straight game points before falling, 30-28.

In game two, High Point grabbed a 10-7 lead. After a timeout by Liberty, the Lady Flames outscored the Panthers 17-4, including a six-point run on Alysson Sanders’ (R-So., OH, Bear, Del.) serve, to retake the lead. Ashley Webber (So., MB, Lakeside, Calif.) provided three kills and three block assists during the run. Liberty then cruised to a 30-22 victory and a 2-0 match lead, wrapping up the game on a kill by Corbin.

An 8-2 spurt by the Flames busted open a 7-7 tie in game three. Then, Sanders served for another six-point run minutes later. Mary Alice Pike (Jr., RS, Durham, N.C.) notched three kills during that surge, which put the game out of reach. Liberty closed out the match with another Corbin kill, finishing a 30-20 victory and a 3-0 match sweep of the Panthers.

Corbin just missed her second triple-double of the season, ending the afternoon with 35 assists, 16 digs and nine kills. Pike and Sanders both recorded 11 kills to spearhead the Liberty offense and libero Lara Bartolomeo (Jr., S/DS, Huntington Beach, Calif.) finished with 23 digs to pace a quartet of Lady Flame defenders in double-digits.

For the match, Liberty owned an 11-4 advantage in team blocks, led by five each from Webber and Autum Black (Sr., MB, Mingoville, Pa.). Webber added eight kills and a .727 attack percentage.

Jamie Kaufman led High Point, posting her second 20-20 performance of the season with 20 kills and 21 digs. Setter Kristina Taylor added 38 assists and 10 digs.

Liberty, which has played 16 of its 19 matches away from the Vines Center this season, will stay on the road for one more weekend. The Lady Flames’ two-match conference road trip will begin with a Friday evening match at Coastal Carolina (5-17, 1-5 Big South). The contest will begin at 7 p.m. Liberty defeated the Chanticleers, 3-1 on Oct. 6 at the Vines Center.
